Android TV Box rebadged Geniatech atv1000 £52.49 @ Maplin

54
Found 8th Feb 2012
ITs been listed before but now b grade stock and almost £30.00 cheaper.

I have one and with the latest update it streams flawlessly from my media server 1080p hd over the network wireless and rj45 needs a class n wireless router though.

you tube, skype with usb webcam etc, streaming films / audio, browsing the internet and loads of apps inc angry birds and cut the rope.

there is a ice cream sandwich update coming too which will make this almost perfect, i have tried the beta and the browser is so much better not all works at the mo for ics but its looking good... i have a galaxy nexus so know what ics will bring and its all good...

at £52.49 these are a bargain but may not be for everyone as you have to upgrade.

Just to point out this is not google tv

This is just a box running android, the same as your phone without the screen.

But a good price none the less.
Thanks for pointing out it's not google tv, just an android box, Sven... I got excited when I read the title. Not sure this link works better than the OPs, if not the product code is B71NL maplin.co.uk/cid…489 £30 for B grade android media player from Maplin. Maybe it's not as well supported by the dev community as the OPs? Otherwise this looks like better value.

Its only got 2.2 on it unless there is an update...

The geniatech works on netflix and radio streaming too, mkv's play at 1080p...

deffo works with webcam and usb wireless keyboard, plus the remote does work quite well its like a virtual mouse you move about in the air to get the pointer to move.

Not much money to spend to have a play! If I didn't have a WD Live on the main TV and Sumvision Cyclone on the bedroom TV I would probably buy one just for the media playing.
You get a full 28 days return policy and free delivery over £35.00 too...

mkv's play at 1080p...

Already have the latest gen WDTV so no real need for this but wondering how it copes with DTS sound? Decode it? Ship it out via HDMI to allow an external decoder to do the work? Any idea?

The support for the Cideko looks pretty non existent, but my wife could see the point of spending £27 (don't forget the DISCOUNT3 code for people buying either of these), but not £50. The Cideko has the same style of keyboard as you are describing and the keyboard gets decent reviews. The dongle is separate so if the interface really sucks it's a good deal for just the keyboard and I'll attach it to my netbook which is serving as my current HTPC.

If you are serious about getting a decent HTPC, all the mod support for the OP's box is going to make it a much much better experience. If you aren't going to mod it, I would go for the Cideko. The Cideko website shows 2.3 support, but no idea how I could find the files to upgrade it.

I have a a wd live tv latest gen, its good but no web surfing apps etc etc, but its good at netflix and has iplayer although iplayer is not a must its a nice option, wd has a few wireless issues for me when reconnecting to the network, I have both but like the option of of the apps and internet browsing, you can check your emails, facebook and of course the good old android customise the desktop, load vtl launcher i think its called works really well for a front end...

as far as i can see its decodes dts, i.e amp shoes dts and audio stream shows dts too.

The photo and a review suggests it is the Geniatech ATV2000 not 1000 as the OP suggests.....

Edit: actually it is correct as there is no TV tuner that the ATV2000 has, just looks like it.....

Looks interesting, but would I use it.....

Yep.

I use the WDTV for it's convenience.

Also have V+ HD and a netbook (and a wireless keyboard/rollerball which works with both the WDTV and netbook) all connected up via the same amp so I don't need this but curious as it does sound quite nifty for fifty odd quid!

the geniatech atv2000 comes with hdtv dongle, this does not but it has 512mb as far as i can tell its the atv1000 without hdtv dongle...

shame it dont have an optical out but hdmi and coaxial options are fine.

Yep just noticed that, going through that long thread at androidforums....
Lack of optical out is a bit of a pain, suppose I currently use stereo and send out to all channels since the living layout is difficult for surround sound....

its free del wither to a address you choose or to store...

still in stock... while stocks last...
Cheers bud just ordered hope its good
I have two hard drives full of media, does this have something that will read the jpg covers or nfo files to display the media information?
Thinking of replacing my Boxee Box as its too limited and they are slow at updating the software.....

Thanks.
Don't forget to use DISCOUNT3 to get £3 off or the Household kit using FREEGIFT voucher which is:
maplin.co.uk/hou…698 apparently worth £14.99 which I think is worth the £3 extra for not being able to use both vouchers in one transaction..... Also quidco available....
damn its now out of stock
Ah, and now I know why it was returned. After about 20mins usage the wifi drops out and won't reconnect. All other computers are fine in the house. So looks like flaky h/w or firmware.

This may not a major showstopper for me as I can link via CAT5 to mini switch which is then cat5 to my router. But it should not be like this.

Does anyone know if this h/w or f/w related. I'm tempted to upgrade to 2.3 but want to know what the issue is before I start.
This unit may have to go back if its got issues
If I can get the wifi issue resolved, can this unit play BBC iplayer streams? The stock Android 2.2 OS does not allow this.
I phoned my local store which still has 3 in stock, but they said the price is £79.99. They suggested it might have been an online offer only. I think this deal has expired.
This should be unexpired
These are back in stock online for home delivery (free del)
And if you add the code FREEGIFT you get a "Home Tool Kit" worth £14.95 included.
OK - so it's a Hammer, a screwdriver and what looks like a little torch but hey - its free
Hows everyones experience with this box? Seems a little hit or miss?

From my perspective its more hit than miss.

Once upgraded to Gingerbread (with the SP1), its a different box. The main miss for me is the lack of working iplayer and itvplayer. Its a real pity that you need an old Geniatech optimised version of flash to work on this box, otherwise BBC iplayer would probably work fine.
Iplayer was one of the reason I got the unit actually. I live in hope that someone will do something about this. If anything, it looks like it'll have to be the BBC because this unit is not the only Android unit I own that iplayer does not work on.
Lack of 1080p is also a slight issue, especially since I am playing it through a 51" Samsung plasma.

Overall though for just over 50 notes and with a free toolkit, this mini computer is a bargain IMHO.

Have you tried updating or installing the latest version of flash from the Android Market. My HTC phone comes with an old version of Flash pre-installed, but I installed the latest one from the market and it fixed the problems I had with the iPlayer. Will this work on this box? If so I am tempted to buy one,
Flash on this is apparently made for the gpu so updating from the market won't work apparently....

I bought one, liking the fact that ics beta is out, hoping a final release comes.

I had a quick scan through the forum, one person did replace the pre-installed Flash with the latest version from the market and reported that the iPlayer worked on SD streaming, but at a very low frame rate. Most posts stated that the pre-installed Flash was optimised for this particular box and installing a newer version was to be avoided.

Playing catch up tv from the web is important to me, so as much as I love the idea of this type of box (and the price), I unfortunately cannot not buy one until the firmware properly supports it. I will be watching the forums to see if the ICS release fixes this problem.
Biggest problem is if it sells out.... I saw one go similar for £65 on ebay 2 days ago though, refurbished and delivered.....

If you wait - you may be too late IMHO.

Having said that just found this:
Geniatech ICS released
Don't know how old this news is though
I replied in the android forums thread, I emailed them and only a beta is currently available, looking at April time for a final release for ICS.....
Still am optimistic, the tech support lady has been excellent and replied within minutes today.....
Well it's OOS again so should be expired.

+1
I had been to two Maplin stores in London today and both had stocks of the product; however the price is £79.99 and weren't prepared to reduce any further.

It cannot be ordered online anymore as it is discontinued model.

Jeez, your grammar and punctuation is bad man. Hate that txt tlk.
A couple more B-Grade units became available this morning - I managed to get one of these before they ran out.

There are still stores with new stock on the. Shelves - but as previously indicated, these are priced at £79.99 each.

Is there a way to track when the B grade becomes available? I am struggling to find this piece elsewhere apart from Maplin.
Got mine through the post.... Everything looks new apart from the greasy fingers on the remote control, will have to clean that, although it is a gloss finish.
Have updated it, will test it out in the next few days.... Angry Birds was pretty easy to play on it, like the remote control.
