Can you voice control it and activate it with your voice actually like an Echo Dot or do I have to activate it with a button like the other bad speakers with Alexa built in?
Looks good, heat added

Just watched a review, it's hands free voice control.
From the description

"Just say the wake word "Alexa" and Genie plays music, controls your smart home devices, answers your questions, sets calendars, reports the weather and news and more."

I've bought one
Am I just being paranoid? or are these kind of devices really listening continually to background voices?

I have heard stories of stuff being ordered on Amazon without consent just by the Alexa device hearing certain keywords.

I like teh idea for home automation (heating / lighting) and maybe to play music, but do not want a continuous data capture of everything that is said. I know Facebook et al are doing this - have said something to wife at home and next minute adverts appear on Facebook ...... so "they must be listening" !!!

thoughts?

I was torn beween Amazon and Google - Apart from controlling the lights, I have Google Play Music - Anyone use an Amazon device to control Google Play Music?
Worth checking that this supports all the Alexa skills you use as these 3rd party devices often don't have the same access to the full set like the Amazon devices do.

You have to set up an account via Alexa in order to buy stuff , so if you don't set one up she can't order anything. You can ask Alexa to put things on a shopping list though and she'll put it on the phone app ready for when you go to the local supermarket.

Yes. These sadly don’t have the calling/drop-in feature.
not bad alternative to the dot. I would have got these if I didn't get dots recently

It also asks you back if you want it, I had enough trouble ordering something I did want let alone it doing it by accident!

It's always 'listening' but waiting for the keyword (alexa for example) before it starts recording and saving what you have said on their servers.

In theory, can amazon/hackers be listening and recording everything without the key word? Probably.

But in terms of the product, it will be continuously listening but will will only save the recordings which start with the key/command word.

You can go into your account and listen to all the recordings saved and can delete the ones you don't want.

Obviously the idea is that the more recordings the better it will get. I'm sure amazon use the recordings to improve alexa.
I have to stop buying these kinda of things, i have more alexas, bluetooth speakers and google homes than you can shake a stick at!
Anyone got one? Wondered what the speaker was like compared to the Dot and the standard Echo

This review says the sound quality is worse on this than the dot.

I quite agree. We're giving our privacy away on a plate. If the gubmint was listening to every word we said we'd be up in arms, wouldn't we?

You can't play Google music through Alexa, you're better off getting a Google device

If these devices were uploading anything other than what we say using the Alexa prompt, there would be thousands of people noticing and pointing it out to the world.
Here's are some reviews - compared to the Echo Dot, no dual band wifi, no Bluetooth, poorer microphone sensitivity and importantly, no spatial recognition (unlike a bunch of Alexas within earshot which can work out which one is closest to you, so only one will respond.)

HOWEVER, the bass on this is supposed to be better compared to the Dot, which of course has almost no bass.

Ta .I've wanted one for a while but was such a tight ass I didn't want to risk 35 quid so this with topcashback at 24 quid was ideal for a taster

So true. Could you imagine the amount of bandwidth and server spaces needed? Then imagine the amount of peoples needed to comb through the it...

People get super paranoid about technology

Sounds like most of of what you'd want this for is pretty bad... If people want better speakers I'd suggest getting speakers.

Amazon recently halved the bandwidth on prime video, bet it was because alexa was stealing it all telling them what you had for tea

Thanks. That's some feat. Makes me wonder why Amazon would want to licence out the tech to them, other than the usual £££

More devices sold makes them more likely to become the defacto device.

I'd have to agree with that. You can't expect as good sound quality on such small speakers as you would on a top of the range 'Bluetooth ' job costing many times more. Most of us listen to music whilst we are working, etc. and ,unless the sound quality was really dire , we wouldn't even be bothered. You'll always get those that want to pay 3 star prices but expect 5 star products , especially on here
