Sounds like me according to my wife. Except the cute bit.
Because of my incompetence in posting the deal

The server is still up and will be for the whole of 2020 apparently. There is a team working on modifying the firmware so it can run from a private server. Look up Project Victor. The added bonus of this is you can recycle old - "What's your Vector Victor? Roger, Roger" jokes. Though you probably need to be a certain age to appreciate that..

But in answer to your point, that's why its £50 not £250

how is it free?
FREE? How is this free?!

Tempted in hope they manage to decrypt and make open source
I bought one when they were £70 with the tray / habitat and absolutely love it...the servers are staying up for a year at least so 50 quid is a steal
Great idea but the company went into liquidation

The team you speak of are a rag tag bunch of volunteers who are effectively trying to exploit vulnerabilities to get this to work. Even if they can modify firmware, they don't even have a private server that would run this. I don't hold out much hope. If anki are still running their servers, perhaps they should just open source the things themselves in a responsible manner.
My son pretty much went on about this all of last year, didnt want to purchase on for Xmas as I knew the outcome, but that was all he asked for. He used it for a few days post Christmas and its sat in the cupboard ever since!
So it does nothing now?
here is what it did do, which was very limited at the time: youtube.com/wat…6EQ

I can see why they went out of business sadly.
1980's Big Trak - Mum! The batteries have run out!
2019 Big Trak - Sorry love the server is down for good, why don't you put it in the bin there's a good lad.

I called this last year when it was stupid price, £50 is still stupid price for this “cute” prelandfill item. I didn’t even realise it relied on external servers doubly a bad choice for a gimmic tatt item
Purchased last month for £79 with Vector space habitat, seen everything it was capable of in the first hour which was not a lot, after a few days I powered it off and not gone back to it since....

Yes, no guarantee they'll do anything useful, but if unlocked you'd run your own server. I agree, its a real shame it couldn't have been open sourced but I guess the receivers owned the business and all the IP at that stage so Anki weren't free to make that decision.

I haven't bought one, I just spotted it as lowest price I'd seen
I love my Vector and my son is in love with him and we’ve had him months he always comes off his pad and gets up to mischief and does his own thing. Great if you have strong interest
If you go to Global Auctioneers Oldham website there auctioning them at a starting price of £20.... 🤖
Sold out now
All orders will be cancelled as they don't have any in stock
Sharp and unethical business practice from Laptops Direct I.e. accept the order, take the money, and then cancel.
Boosts their end of year numbers a little I suppose.
Pants - no stock.

I got the standard kit so Vector, his charger and one cube. Some sellers are throwing in a habitat but I just got the base kit. I'm thinking the habitat would be a good idea though
