Tech Spec:
This is the business when it comes to tv tuner capture devices. It has a great philips tv tuner which supports tv broadcasts up to 158 channels. It can capture from external devices in composite, s-vhs and firewire. It can even encode in Mpeg1 & Mpeg2 for cd/dvd video burning. The work is all done by the xrecorder so not only does it not tie up your pc like some other methods it is also quicker and the outputted files are a lot smaller than software compression methods. At 420g its not too heavy if you want to use it on the move and as you can see below the tv tuner supports pretty much everywhere.

Its late and my brains not working...
what im guessing is that this is a TV tuner for your PC which can also encode and record programs to your pc..
It uses its own processing power to encode and record and just bungs video and files onto your PC..

is that close to what it does?

+1 with the late/brain comment

Does this help?

AOpen’s Xrecorder VX2000S is an external TV tuner which can also perform still image capture and video capture using MPEG2 hardware compression, so everything you need is found in an external box rather than an add-in card.

The XRecorder easily connects to a PC with a USB cable and offers IEEE 1394 (DV), S-Video and composite video inputs for connecting video devices, cameras, TV, etc. The great benefit is that all processing takes place in the XRecorder itself, which can output in both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats, which means that the resulting video file is a lot smaller than raw video.

Dont have to use it for analogue ..... it's a capture device too and a very good one .

I bought one for a tenner from someone on one of the forums to try . It has Firewire , so you can link a camcorder to it as well as anything you want to capture from , DVD player , video player , Satellite system ,games consul ,it has video and audio inputs .
It uses a CirusLogic chip to process the data then pushes it through the USB port .So, it does all the work ................not the PC/laptop CPU .You get software on disk , drivers and capture program , but I dont think it'll work with Vista . I think these things were £150 when they first hit the market . Bigpockets were recently selling them for £29 .
