Been looking around for a decent 42" TV to replace my 8 year old LG 32". I thought I might as well look at something bigger and including smart / 3d features.

I found the LG 42LA640V in a few stores. It's about £499 typically and I found it at Apollo (a local store to me) for £449. I fully intended to do a Price Match with someone like Currys for the 10% difference, but this is much better.

1) Use Quidco to find apollo direct which has a 5% off £399 spend code (apl3) and 3% cashback.
2) Click through to site
3) Find the LG 42LA640V priced at £449 and add to basket
4) Select collect & reserve or FREE delivery
5) THEN add the voucher code. Be careful because if you change your mind on collect & reserve or free delivery, the voucher code appears to disappear (but can be added again without issue)
6) Click update basket to get the initial discounted price of £426.55 (which is amazing in itself).
7) Complete your order or await contact for collect and reserve.
7) You should receive 3% quidco in due course on the £426.55 which I estimate at £12.80, reducing the effective total price to a simply stunning £413.75.

This appears to be an excellent TV with solid reviews. If it lasts as long as my last LG I'll be delighted.

Hi does anyone know whether LG have the plex app on this model?

Someone has written a plex app and is trying to get it on the lg app store. In the mean time you can side load it from a usb drive. Works good enough on my 47" version of this TV that I have no complaints but is not as well featured as the Samsung one. However since it has only been in development for 2 months it's more than adequate.

Have a search on google for it. Not sure if I am allowed to post a link to it here.

Just a heads up to anyone thinking of purchasing one of these. There was a deal posted last year for a higher spec model at only around £7 difference. The only downside is you have to buy off Amazon Germany. You get double the refresh rate, a fully backlit IPS screen , built in sub woofer, a magic remote:

    amazon.de/gp/…ter

I bought this one and have been over the moon. Just another option if people want.

Ditto, I might be able to shrug off returns issues, but doesn't the uk use different chips for it's hd terrestrial telly? Any other region issues privateeye0?

Actually it does. It's not in the app store, because it's built in! I bought this exact model from Apollo 2000 about a month ago for £450 and it's amazing! The speakers are awful but added 2.1 logitech pc speaker via the earphone socket, and it's great. Picks up my plex server, my nas drive, my mint linux laptop, my android phone etc with no problems at all. plex shows up dvd covers etc. It's played everything I've thrown at is so far. LG android app is also excellent (watch your TV on your phone, change volume, channel, start tv apps, move cursor, use android keyboard etc.) too many features to list. Samsumg could learn a 100 tricks from this TV alone. The 3D is a great bonus, and as long as your somewhere near the level of the screen, the 3D works very well. No one believes I only paid 450 for it, so at this price, it's a steal!

Great price for the tv only.
I think Richer Sounds are selling this for £550 with a 5 year guarantee.
Personally I just bought the samsung um40f6500 for £547 with the 5 year guarantee from costco. That is a fantastic tv!

The Android app for controlling Samsung is unreliable and from reading the reviews, won't work on non-Samsung phones, and then not that many of those. The Smart features are also pretty basic compared to the LG.

If anyone's interested, if you hook up a USB laptop hardrive to this, that's larger than 40Gb, you can pause live TV. It'll also record, but I haven't got around to check if it has 2 tuners yet, to see if you can record a channel that you're not watching, but I suspect not. But It'll also do series record (useful for when you're not at home, at least).

Yesterday LG released another firmware via auto update (if you have it selected in the settings) so I'd suggest that it's being well supported.

Sorry for all the posts, but I keep remembering stuff. This TV also supports Miracast / Intel's WiDi , Wi-Fi Direct and soft AP.

Unfortunately mine seems to suffer from backlight bleed and banding / 'Dirty Screen Effect' - particularly when panning with solid backgrounds like watching football. I'll probably send it back and take my chances with another screen.
Otherwise the TV is really good for the price. 3D is impressive and the Smart features look good too from what I've played with.

Does any one know how this TV is for gaming with a PS4 I have just returned a LG42LN540V to Amazon for terrible motion blur on games. On Fifa 14 you could see a trail behind the ball when kicked up the park.

TV's are not really designed with refresh rate for game play in mind, yes *some* of them have a slightly higher Hz that then allows a lower refresh, but it is not the same as a *2ms* gaming monitor via hdmi setup.

Also did you download the latest firmware for the 540v and set the profile to one that suits your custom use? It may have helped with the feel / look of the blur.

The 640v is a better TV than the 540 and at this price is MAD! If you want 3D as well, you will be hard pushed to get one with the spec for the value in this deal!

As above this is an awesome deal. This is the exact tv that I want.

Does anyone know if Amazon or John Lewis would price match this?

Just looking at the delivery page it states "Please note that our free delivery offer excludes I.T. products and certain geographical areas in Scotland and Northern Ireland; please contact us on 08712 313121 if you require further information." Might be worth giving them a bell first?

Very timely as a friend offered to buy my older LG 42LM3450 TV

I was sold right after reading a couple of reviews. Looking forward to trying the timeshifting/recording. Not sure whether 'twin HD tuner' refers to sat/freeview or 2x freeview, so might have to watch whatever's recording. Saves having another box below the TV though!

    Thanks OP!

Collected mine from store today. Excellent TV. Took 5 mins to figure out the stand and set up was a breeze.
One tip for games, someone mentioned blurring. I spotted this on Fifa. Recommend dipping into Settings... Picture... Picture Option and turn off Motion Eye Care and TruMotion.
    Have fun!
