Very nice iMac!

( let's hope here's a mac post without the haters rolling in with their predictable invective! :lazy:)

That seems cheap , very good system. Well worth it,just bought a new pc so wont get one.

Looks like a great price - older model, but the Apple site is charging £999 for a refurb with the same spec - so hot from me

Heat and rep added!

Can't believe i just accidentally voted hot on this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Microsoft fan but anything's better than a mac; horrible things. Sooooo not worth £1000 either.

Excellent spec for the price, I have this exact model but paid well over a grand for it earlier in the year. Beautiful screen and perfect size to do photography, video or graphics work on.

It is the old model, same price as the refurb store.

Cancom do sell refurbs and they don't actually say whether this is 'old stock' or a 'refurb'.

How much is the same model usually?

Not starting an argument, but why do you say that? :whistling:

Just my opinion. I did multimedia design for 3 years at university and had to use macs. i really just dont like the look of the OS and a lifetime of working with PC's makes the whole thing seem awkward to use for me.

also, im glad you asked that in a non-argumental way as so many would have done, have a gold star!!!

There really is no argument for bad taste. You just have it or you don't.

I still personally don't see the whole reason behind 'you have to get a mac for graphics design' people. Photoshop and illustrator are identical on both PC and Mac (except you get a not-really-that-useful right mouse button on the PC!)

The only thing I ever found nice about macs was iMovie, to be honest. So simple, yet does a decent job! The only reason I'd really, honestly, buy a mac, is so I could tell everybody about it while drinking my triple shot vendi mocchiato with caramel flakes at starbucks.

It is very nice and I'd love to have one ... but the Apple premium (i.e. charging £400+ more than a PC with the same or better hardware spec) isn't worth paying. I just can't justify the extra cost, no matter how good they are.

I want one.

I can't afford one.

I'll have a PC instead. Almost bought a macbook but got a windows laptop for £100 less and it is much more powerful (doesn't look as nice though).

Nice price if you are after one though.

Well I don't think this is the best place to ask such a massive question like why are they better. I can point you in a general direction of 2 reasons why good designers swear by Macs.

Designers and artists generally see more beauty in the world around them. They absorb that in many ways and really appreciate it. They see Apple and the ethos and care that goes into every single product they make and they support it.

The second area is the Operating System. A very simple thing that sums up the difference between OS X and Windows is the text. On Windows text everywhere is badly implemented and poorly aliased. On OS X Apple take great care to get the text looking perfect. This really sums up the sort of attention and care that Apple put into every aspect of their OS. Apple can finely tune their OS so much more because they make the computer it runs on. Unlike Microsoft who have to make it work on all sorts of components.

Alexander McQueen or George. They are both clothes but made with very different principals.

Indeed it so easily could have gone into a long tedious argument.... "but anything's better than a mac; horrible things"

That's awful. I'd rather buy a PC for the same spec at £400

Im holding back here, heavily, but why cant you build a regular system for half this price with double specs and load osx on to it >.<.>
IF your really that bothered about having Mac.

There is no reason for graphics designers to use a Mac over a PC other than pure snobbery. a Mac is a useless computer for snobs.

With a PC I can run a 64 bit version of Photoshop which is something Mac users CANNOT do. Mac's are lagging behind in the technology and anyone who bases their purchase on the grounds 'it looks good' should not have a computer anyway.

If you find what I've said at all offensive or wrong, then go and right click something...

You can, but don't get Mac users started on the "X-Mac" debate......

Buy an MSI Wind if you want a cheap solution to use OS X.

I can't believe you spent so long writing out so much crap.

And technically, although the point you're getting at is correct, Apple don't make the PC OS X runs on. All the components are made by other companies, and I don't even think Apple assembles them themselves. They just have a very very very small compatibility list. Which is both a bonus (as you say, it makes it easier), and a problem (less choice, well, no choice, which drives up the cost massively and reduces any possibilities of users customising hardware specs to suit exactly what they want....)

Horses, Courses, I personally don't want to pay £400 apple tax to do the exact same thing except with a one button badly designed mouse and a nice white glossy finish.

Good luck finding a similarly specced PC with a 1920 x 1200 24" IPS monitor for 600 quid.

You got me:p

I think it was a Xerox PC (if I remember correctly) which came with a mouse that had the right click function. I can't actually understand why Apple hasn't integrated a right click. It makes sense.

When I use a Mac I find it difficult to navigate pages because I'm so used to Opera Browser's right click functions.

EDIT - I should point out, I run Linux for the main part - and I don't use Windows out of choice!

Yea I can see your point, I love the keyboard shortcuts on OS X though. OS X is obviously good enough seeing as Windows 7 has taken a lot of the functionality from OS X and branded it a new feature.

This perfectly sums up the difference between people who 'get' Apple and those who don't. Whereas other companies concentrate on the checklist of specifications, they concetrate on the experience of sitting down and actually using the thing. To put it another way, most tech companies prioritise engineering; Apple prioritises design (by which I do not just mean "looks"). There's nothing inherently wrong in either approach, but for some reason every time Apple is mentioned somewhere on the internet, Mac users always get bashed.

From the wikipedia page you posted, i quote "Since leaving Microsoft, Gates continues his philanthropy and, among other projects, purchased the videos rights to the Messenger Lectures series titled The Character of Physical Law, given at Cornell University by Richard Feynman in 1964 and recorded by the BBC. Game set and match.

Read the right hand side and the first line, Occupation: Chaiman of Microsoft.....

Oh and this:
microsoft.com/pre…spx

From Microsoft themselves...................

its not about hate, preference or arguing.

its a fact that spending this much on a PC will get you much more including an OS which has better compatability for a larger range of software and games.

if a core2duo mac is worth £1000 and its supposed to be a good deal, i wonder how much i7 mac's go for at normal price.......its obvisouly not worth it.

iCodd;7112931

I'll be honest, I haven't really learned the mac short cut keys - I only use a Mac in college for the most basic of tasks.

I can't actually see the similarity between Windows 7 and Snow leopard. The dock on the bottom of the screen is sort of like Windows 7's task bar, but Windows 7's taskbar has increased functionality.

EDIT - I think Microsoft and Apple have both put a lot of effort in to the release of their new operating systems, that is something you won't hear often (from me anyway :P)

Good lord. Not wanting to get involved on either side of the argument but can I just say - macs have shipped with 5-button (actually 4, but the top of the mouse can be clicked either left or right) mice for years. They've also been compatible with all USB mice for many many years, and all the OS and most software have had right-click functionality built in for as long as I can remember.

So regardless of how valid any of the other arguments are - the right-click one is a dead duck.
