sorted byJust like Tile the AirTag has Bluetooth and relies on phone users’ Bluetooth, GPS and data to tell you where that phone ‘saw’ your distant tag.
There are massively more iPhones than phones running the Tile App. So wherever your thing is, there’s more chance of an iPhone seeing it.
But if there is nobody within Bluetooth range, it won’t be seen at all.
Within Bluetooth range, both can make the tag bleep so you can detect it with your ears - hopefully.
Very recent iPhones with uwb can use that to direct you to within inches of the tag.
Chipolo, a Tile competitor, have signed up with Apple and offer a model that works like an AirTag (that lacks uwb). One point in favour of that Chipolo is that it has a key ring hole — so no need to buy an expensive tag holder.
Batteries on Tile and AirTag last about a year, because they are only supporting Bluetooth. (edited)

The AirTag not having the functionality to ring my phone is a god send. I don't want the person I'm stalking to click to button to find me in the crowd.
You can’t click the AirTag to ‘ring your phone’ (on a Tile, double clicking it forces your phone to loud and ring, very useful at times) and there is no integrated keyloop - so if you want to clip onto your keys you will need an extra accessory.

Well the iPhone that thief had which he’d probably also stolen would have pinged the last known position of your bike as field in middle of nowhere
Does anyone know if these can be pinpointed like the above Interesting to know or within so many metres. Wouldn't mind fitting one on my motorbike. What's battery life like?

It’s not a very good one as it would tell the victim that an air tag has been following them.

Some folk do. BUT you will need an extra cost mounting to attach it to the pet or existing collar.
However the Apple-licensed Chipolo One Spot has a hole for key ring type mounting. Just be aware that it does lack uwb for short range directed “Precision finding” with a uwb (very recent) iPhone. (edited)
