Cheers OP - was on the market for Sonos One but figured this might be a better deal and snapped one!
The Sonos One is overall a better product, this is great if you have an Apple Music account though.
HomePod sound quality is far better than Sonos, I have both and prefer HomePod
I have both Sonos and HomePod. If you are mainly using Apple Music go for the HomePod without a doubt.

In what way?
I have both and the Sonos supports loads of music services such as Spotify and Tidal etc. the HomePod doesn't support these so you are locked into using Apple Music. The Sonos One supports AirPlay 2 as well so no loss of direct streaming compared to the HomePod. Siri is fairly useless still, the Sonos range support both Alexa and Google Assistant which are miles better for most queries and home automation. Then there is sound quality, the HomePod sounds fine however the Sonos sounds just as good and can be tuned with TruePlay which I found was more noticeable at correcting audio issues than Apples automatic system. Finally I found trying to play music from multiple HomePods it would drop the sync or the sound would stop entriely when grouping and ungrouping speakers via AirPlay fairly frequently. The Sonos experience in comparison is flawless, its never dropped out once. I could go on, but basically if you use Apple Music and have devices that support HomeKit for automation the HomePod is fine, however for most other people and uses the Sonos range is much better.
I find Siri fine. The sound quality on these is better than the Sonos 1. Tapping your phone on the top of the HomePod to transfer what you are listening to it superb and it obviously ties in with other Apple equipment if you use iOS.

Sonos offers more services but if you are only using Apple Music. Go with this.

For info, HomePod looks likely to be allowing access to Spotify soon. This was shown at the last Apple event.

Agree with all of this apart from the sound quality. I have both and I reckon the HomePod is superior with regard to sound. That’s why I would choose it over the Sonos. If voice assistant is more important though, go for the Sonos. Though worth noting it doesn’t have the full GA or Alexa functionality. Also my Sonos One lost the ability to voice control BBC radio recently whereas it’s fine with our Alexa dot. Rumour is also that Apple will give access to third party streaming services in the next OS update so it will get better.

I had the same issue with BBC radio streaming, I think I fixed it by removing and re-adding the BBC skill with the newer one in the Amazon Alexa app. This was caused by the BBC no longer supporting some third parties for streaming. I’ve also got Amazon Echo’s and Google Nest hubs, what functionality have you found is missing from the Sonos version?

I may try switching it to Alexa then as I couldn’t find a way to resolve it with GA. I was thinking of things like voice recognition for personalised responses but it seems that Sonos may have recently introduced that. Fixes for issues are generally resolved quicker though with a ‘pure’ Alexa or GA speaker. Don’t get me wrong, I have lots of Sonos stuff and I love it. I just think the HomePod’s sound is better than the One’s and in fact any smart speaker of a similar price.
Can anyone please compare two of these in stereo to the Sonos Five or Play5
