Big question is which iOS version will it be running? iOS 9.3 will kill it, performance-wise, OK with iOS 7 though.
Upd: States iOS 5 in Technical Specs.
It does have a very nice camera still, which isn't that much better on today's iPhones. 8GB is the equivalent on an enlarged Prostrate though, you'll be constantly offloading any Pics, (yes I said Pics ).

Good way of getting iMessages.

Mine is running 9.3.1 and it is perfectly OK for my needs. I don't do games, so can't comment on performance there. Everything else is fine.
8gb sucks on these phones - you don't actually get that, you get 5gb. I have little in the way of apps, no games, and have to delete apps if i want to download a new one. This is my work phone so stuck with it. I replaced my 8gb android because of similar issues, it's not big enough memory for modern phones.

Are they locked to O2 network?

O2 live chat...
Me: The iPhone 4S graded phones, are they locked to o2?
O2: When you buy the phone from any service provider, it's pre locked to that network.
And you need to unlock it first to use any other networks SIM in it.
Me: And can you do that free of charge?
O2: Unlocking is free if the phone has bought under the contract on O2 Pay Monthly.

I can't think who I would ever feel comfortable recommends a 4s at this point. Given that you can pickup a 5s on eBay for around £30 more with double the speed/storage, lightening etc.
So many better phones can be had new for this price. The phone is far past it's prime

Stupid comment really.

It doesn't really matter if it's only £10. 8GB and outdated tech means it's pretty much unusable.

You can pick up a droid for a few quid extra.

just cos it's cheap doesn't mean it's practical , for instance would you buy a 4gb (if they had one) for £35 if you could only install 2 apps at a time , probably no
8gb....Whats app and maybe a couple of apps and thats it. No thanks. Theres very VERY few can get by so limited by their phone

Also, given the age of these, what's the battery going to be like?
Great to give to a tween moaning for an iPhone so they can fit in with their friends at school I suppose.

I bought a refurb 5s from O2. It was supplied unlocked but locks to the network of the first sim you register it with. I'm currently using mine with 3.

Yes it is spreading virulently......... Hopefully the cancer that consumes iOS.
Spend an extra £40 and get a 5S, seriously. The 4S is a very, very old phone.
We have an old one knocking around and it runs the latest OS fine. The only reason it isn't used any longer is that the battery is knocking on five years old and lasts about three hours.

Very tidy little phone for the price.
I've had a 4S as a work phone for over 3 and a half years and it's still very usable.
I love this phone, I know it is slow but you can disable some of the flashy stuff in iOS to speed things up. SIRI however is absolutely brilliant on this, the 8 gb thing you will struggle with however, spotify, google music, etc. Photos can be stored online and streamed directly to the phone. Using a moto x previously taught me how to get around memory constraints.
I just wished we could overclock this phone and drop a bit more ram in!

Bargain if you can get R2D2. But probably out of stock.
I doubt if any other 5 year old / second hand 'phone was posted here it would get hot. Apple glasses.
Keep an eye on the o2 refresh 5s grade b but near enough new have been £96 recently with up to 10 months Apple warranty.

Thats a 5 year old phone and it still receives updates, you'd be hard pressed to find one of the same age running Android/Blackberry OS/Symbian/Web OS/Windows that still receives updates/is running the latest OS version from the OEM/OS provider.

does anyone know if o2 iPhones can be unlocked cheaply?
on ebay there are ads for around £12-£15 but thats too much.

I'm looking for a spare/temporary phone while I sell my main phone and waiting to buy the next one.

This a decent price for a basic phone. It will get you into or keep you in the Apple eco system if that's what you want. Only an idiot will think someone buying it is expecting it to compete with an iPhone 6. Not everyone uses smart phones as PCs or for games. Phone calls, messages, whatsapp email etc. It will handle all that perfectly. Personally at this price point I would prefer an Android based phone over this, but for someone wanting an iPhone its a decent price.

It's also pretty easy and cheap to change the battery.

Post #6 would seem to be using this and having no issues. Might just be a case of certain requirements for certain people
Perfect if your just using it as a "phone" and are one of those blind Apple zombie people that thinks they're better than everyone else because they have an Apple logo on their devices.

Yeah I guess it's a disease if you can't read ;)...All these iOS users complaining that Andriod is too complicated. Not everyone wants to limit themselves to what Apple decides is necessary.

Yeah but everyone reports it was excellent condition and sooner have 5S, 16GB, etc for that bit extra. Could never see the attraction of iPhones before they started enlarging the screen, but obviously this is very subjective and individual. Even now, I'm not a compete convert (but then I have never used iTunes etc. - I can understand those that are completely within the hardware and software ecosystem).
All depends if the phone is unlocked or locks to the first sim that you insert. If it is automatically locked to O2 then it is a headache for most people.

If it is unlocked or locks to your network and you are able to use it for 12 months without issue then I can see its value. O2 usually despatch the phones promptly (unlike most people's experience of Vodafone for the Z3 or G3 etc) and should honour any issues in the 12 months.

If it is locked to O2, for PAYG at least the O2 network using carriers have all increased their prices - Giffgaff, Lycamobile, Tesco - the only good tariff is on toggle @3p per min - 9p per text - has anyone actually used them?
This is £69. For £69 you could barely buy a better phone for 'spare phone' use, and if it's just as a second phone then I don't see how the storage is a problem. Let's say you go biking at the weekends and don't want to carry your 6S Plus with you, but want access to your iMessage and Facetime...for some people this would be a great purchase, and saying 'for only £40 more you can get this and that' is pretty meaningless when you're looking at these sort of prices, since £40 more is over 50% more expensive.

It's not that. Complicated isn't a word I'd use to describe Android. Messy, yes, complicated, no.
