Not a bad little machine for £225 as this has the 8GB RAM upgrade (can't be upgraded after on the 2014 models). You can upgrade the hard disk to a SSD easily though as this model takes the normal 2.5mm drive. Would make a decent Plex server or ok for most general office tasks.

Depends on what you want. I’ve got the 2012 quad i7 with 16GB as my Plex machine. This with 8GB upgrade can’t touch that but does have two thunderbolt 2 ports and can output in 4K (30 only but good for movies at 24 frames) so would be a better media player vs a work horse. Plus you won’t get the i7 2012 model for £225 and this will probably be supported for longer. 8GB enough for most.

Put a cheap SSD in it and it’s a great little machine for everyday use! Got one myself.

Because this is not awful deal. It has a decent amount of RAM. It’s a good deal.

And there is more to it than just stating that the 2012 is better 👋🏼

Fair enough...
It just didn’t come across like that for someone who may be interested in buying a very decent computer (once upgraded to SSD).

Most new windows or Mac small form factor machines and laptops you can’t nowadays. Ones you can like the Mac mini 2018 and NUC you pay a premium for and in case of Mac mini it’s a lot harder. This is chromebox etc pricing now so upgrading RAM not issue. Agreed when they launched the 2014 as the prices for the 8GB or especially 16GB were a joke (RAM direct from Apple still is a joke). It’s a none issue at this price.

Glad we could clear that up
One thing also to note in the 2012 i7 vs this is I have found the 2012 quad core to be quite noisy vs the i5 dual cores when pushing it. Hence why these i5s are a better option for media players with less noise and 4K.

That is true my i7 is a tad noisy when processing 4k I’ll admit. Good point!

You can upgrade the ram in this base model.

Not from what I researched

“Unfortunately, the “Late 2014” Mac mini models have soldered RAM that cannot be upgraded after the initial system purchase.”
ezzer7206/10/2019 19:44

2012 yes but 2014 (this model) no RAM upgrades at all hence why you wouldn’t want less then the 8GB model
Sorry guys, my bad - you can change the HDD for an SSD, got mixed up (you can't do that on the more powerful versions)
I found the simplest solution was to boot from an external USB 3.0 SSD and use the internal drive for storage/Time Machine.
I bought the 2012 model in 2014 because I didn't want to be stuck with limited RAM / HD but for £225 with 8GB this is a good deal.

What benefits would this have over this?

uk.webuy.com/pro…0-b

It's what I bought 6 months ago for my plex server, have a 120gb msata ssd for windows 10 and 2tb ssd for media (overkill for ssd I know)

only typically 1-2 streaming and not that often is mainly classic media, I use netflix for current stuff.

I use chrome remote desktop to remote into the Windows 10 from home or away from home which works a treat, and I use task scheduler to shutdown the computer at night and then a wifi plug which at times like evening will turn off and two minutes later turn on which will boot up the nuc (bios setting to boot upon power loss)

Overkill but i'm a tight ass on electric -- and why not its cool.

what benefits would using this be?

Nothing really. Personally I’d only use Mac OS or Linux as a server as more secure and more control over the updates etc (you’d need a Windows 10 licence for your setup as well). I also wouldn’t actually use SSD for Plex as lot of small writes but that’s a personal choice. Have you heard of teamviewer? Better then chrome Remote Desktop and cross platform (and free for personal usage). I run my server 24/7 but again a choice. I’m using the i7 model as share with family and have 3-4 streams sometimes (also the odd 4K HDR) Plus is rather use IT Zoo then CEX (again personal choice). I’d move NUC to Linux if I were you. I own a 8th gen NUC linked to egpu so do love them but also if you’re putting this in front room or on display the Mac mini looks loads nicer!

Just a reminder, this cannot play 4K 100mbit HEVC.
Just curious - what does everyone use their mac minis for? I know i'm probably underutilising my 2012 i5 - its only sits in my daughters bedroom for surfing and netflix

I mean it’s a dual core i5 so those things are fine. The Mac mini was designed to be an entry into Mac OS and used for exactly those sort of things. The 2012 i7 was a bit of an exception (and server models) that aside from graphics card based work could get a lot of work done. There are lots of uses for it with tough build and design. Lots of good vesa and wall mounts too.

its nearly 2020, this base model mac mini was underpowered when it first appeared - I've got two 2.6Ghz i5 models, one with 8GB RAM, the other with 16GB RAM - my 16GB RAM unit struggles as my everyday workhorse, whilst my 8GB RAM unit is fine as a dedicated media unit - as for swapping out HDD, why bother, indeed, it's better to use bootable external drives, be they SSD or 2.5in HDDs, but, and stating its nearly 2020, 8GB RAM is rather meagre, so, if its just to be used for media, yep, should work well, but if its to do a bit more than media I'd look for the higher specced models, which are rare given crazy prices Apple demanded to upgrade RAM originally.

Why bother ? Because SATA III is faster than USB 3.0 and takes 15 mins to swap out

Seriously...
Really, could you please elucidate as to the alleged performance gain, apart from actually booting up given the machine in question was crippled when it first appeared, so, lets spend heaps on a a 1TB SDD, which would better be invested in a 8TB external given all its really now good for is a media player, or, do all your programmes love 8GB of RAM, which I can tell you Adobe ain't too keen on, I have the high end 2014 model and it struggles with 16GB RAM. Tell me, can you change the RAM on this?
