add on a HP IPS monitor, apple keyboard and mouse and you have an iMac for £500

It's 2 years old.

Great price. I paid £474.26 for mine back in 2012. Got it hooked up to a 30" Dell monitor and use it for web design/development and photoshop. Definitely get the extra ram though to boost it to 8gb (very easy to install) Probably get this cheaper but I usually get Kingston ram amazon.co.uk/gp/…c=1

new one is less upgradeable

If you're after the more powerful version see the deal I posted yesterday (i.e. i7 quad core, 1tb) £562.80

New one officially supports 4k too.

I have one of these and its a fantastic bit of kit.

What is this?

Really undecided on which one to go for. The 2012 and 2014 are drawing equal on the pros and cons for me at the moment.

I know what you mean - my i7 one has just arrived but thinking what will I gain from the quad core for nearly 200 notes difference. That said all software is more demanding over time and if I want to run it as a server I can be pretty confident it'll be usable as a desktop too... no plans on using 4k; weirdly I speculatively bought the thunderbolt-DVI adaptors from currys a couple of weeks back as they were so cheap I thought on the offchance I buy a mac there they are and seeing your dabs deal made me hunt out the jigsaw one as a treat to myself!

I think the storage won't go amiss either as I'll finally edit those camcorder movies which is such a dog to do on a PC.

Just bought a Mac Mini from Apple. Damn..

How easy is the current macbook air to upgrade compared to this?

Would never buy a mac again, 2 years later and they are completely out of date and unable to update it in any way to make it current (macbook pro user), waste of a grand.

I think this would make a great base model as you can easily upgrade memory and storage. Just loosing out on the updated 2014 gfx!

What other laptop can you make "current"?...

All you can do is put a bit of ram in it. Actually what can you put in this? What can you put in a iMac?

Apple stores are terrible, they have more staff clued up on phones and ipads but not there computers, its pathetic, a company that has gone down the swanny since its owner died.

well my 2 year old MBP is running Yosemite and is certainly not out of date, in fact it looks brand new and after a 'clean' install of Yosemite is speedier than ever.

Mine is from 2010, by 2012 I was sick and tired of it, built a pc and never looked back, at the a fraction of the cost too.

for me the upgradability won - I've got loads of old machines that are still up to the job with the addition of an SSD and more RAM. (kids use a Dell GX620 on Win8.1 which I bumped up to 4Gb and an SSD - a £75 total outlay).

And in terms of i5 vs i7 buying a bit of longevity now is probably no bad thing (given the new models are fundamentally using CPUs with the same capabilities, I see no reason for the OS to not support them as long as the video drivers are still up to date).

HDD can be changed out, another HDD can be put in (for 2) and RAM can be upgraded, iMacs RAM can be upgraded too. Most AIO PC's aren't upgradeable.

How can you compare a MBP with a home built desktop system, totally different.
Edited by: "paulj48" 28th Oct 2014

This is a great deal. Yes its 2 years old, but you can upgrade the memory and the HDD. It's got virtually the same processor as the middle of the road new version, which costs £569, albeit, it comes with a better GFX Card 8gb vs 4gb RAM and 1Tb HDD, but as a starter, this is a better deal than getting the new £399 1.4Ghz i5.

Acutally, looking at stats, there isn't much in the speed comparing the i5-4260U(1.4Ghz) from 2014 to the i5-3210M(2.5Ghz), so the deal is in the ability to upgrade the unit.

Price seems to have gone back up

Price has just been bumped to £415.99. If you want one and it's in your basket. Move quickly

Still very very happy with my 2008 MBP - upgraded the RAM, put in an SSD operating system flies along, could do with a bit more oomph for my VM's if i am completely honest but otherwise i can't see me needing to upgrade for a while, 6.5 years down the line
