Featuring a thin and lightweight design, the mid 2017 Apple 13.3" MacBook Air features a unibody aluminum enclosure that weighs less than 3 pounds. At its thickest point, the computer is only 0.68" -- it tapers down to 0.11" at its thinnest.

At 13.3" in size, the 16:10 display features a screen resolution of 1440 x 900. It features a glossy finish and LED backlight technology for enhanced image quality and energy efficiency.

The system is loaded with 128GB of flash storage rather than an old-fashioned hard drive. Flash storage doesn't just give you a lighter, thinner computer. It also allows for impressive battery life -- up to 12 hours of web browsing and 30 days of standby time.

The computer is powered by a 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor and has 8GB of 1600 MHz LPDDR3 RAM. Graphics are provided by integrated Intel HD Graphics 6000. The computer features all the amenities you expect on a Mac -- a 720p FaceTime HD webcam, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi (also compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 4.0, and built-in stereo speakers. macOS Sierra is the installed operating system.

Horribly dated model long overdue for retirement. More fool you for spending best part of £700 on this old duffer. Worst time to buy.
5th gen dual core CPU 1.8GHz base with 1440 X 900 TN display for £679?

I get that some prefer Mac OS but surely it's just better to buy a older refurbed Pro model with IPS display and quad core CPU?
This is effectively a 2015 laptop, it is only a "2017" one because in 2017 Apple increased the speed of the processor you get at each price point, but it was still a 2015 processor along with everything else. This was a good laptop although even then the screen was behind the competition but it could be justified thanks to the long battery life. Now you can get long battery life on other thin and light laptops without having an antiquated screen.

It's sad what used to the best thin and light laptop and the laptop that really created the market to begin with be abandoned by Apple. This is a good price but people shouldn't be buying this full stop, and I say this as someone who has all Apple stuff.

Nope, it’s Mac IOS v Windows. Mac wins time and again.

When did Mac become "IOS" I'm pretty sure it's "macOS" now if anything with latest version being Mojave 😬😬😬

IIIRC they increased the RAM from 4GB standard to 8GB standard saving you roughly £120 if you were planning to get the upgrade

True they increased the RAM to 8Gb in the 2016 version but both the 2016 and 2017 version were virtually identical to the 2015 version, just with some extra cost options now as standard

That's because it has a SSD hard drive which has dramatically better performance than cheaper but much larger mechanical hard drives. Once you have a SSD you can never go back as it makes such a huge difference
These still use the Intel "Broadwell" 5th gen CPUs!! We're currently on 'Coffee Lake' 8th Gen CPUs in 2018.

Throw in low res screen and only 128GB storage.....for almost £700!

COLD.

I don't remember seeing those in the apple shop...
Nobody should buy a MacBook Air now, if only to force Apple to stop selling the bloody thing. The screen is *awful*. Personally I got a brand new 12" 2017 MacBook from ebay for £880 recently and it is fantastic.
As a previous poster said, I'd rather find a decent 2014 era 13" MacBook Pro that still has AppleCare on it than spend this amount on an Air.

It’s still superior to some newer laptops thanks to the on board m2 SSD which is something you don’t see very often in mid range laptops. It’s also thin, light, has great battery life, and a trackpad that smashes the competition... plus, you get macOS.

Given the Airs age and the spec of the CPU and RAM I can see why others will think it’s a rubbish deal compared to non-Apple laptops but in my opinion it’s a nice entry price into the Apple world (if you want new with warranty) given that an Apple computer can easily run you 1k.

We had some Airs at work and they perform better than some of our £1k+ iMacs that have those rubbish 5200rpm HDDs.

CPU and RAM numbers don’t paint the whole picture with Apple machines... I can see why it’s hard to side step when coming from PC, though.

I have a similar model, had it nearly 3 years and battery still excellent. Chose it over the newer version with the retina screen as this version has 2 USB's, headphone, SD card reader and thunderbolt. New one only has USBc

Yes I know all of that. Download any editing software about 20gb is gone. Os takes up 10 GB. You have about 80gb left

I'm mostly complaining about the screen. The rest is fine. Up to the buyer to decide if its OK for the price. But the screen... Pfff
I have a MacBook Air Mid 2011 (13”, i5, 4GB, 128GB), still running fine for office/web tasks.

Not an imac or a laptop but in my opinion the most cost effective way to get a mac is a late 2012 quad core i7 mac mini. The last of the upgradeable macs, you can easily upgrade the ram to 16gb and (slightly less easily) install a small solid state drive to create a fusion drive. Multi-core performance is around 11000 on geekbench, about twice as powerful as this 2017 macbook air. But it does mean buying second hand.
Worst Apple Macbook model out there so far. Vastly overpriced.

Every Ultrabook has an SSD these days. The one in this Air isn't M.2 - it uses a proprietary connector where the pinout is different, so you'll need an adaptor like the one below if you're planning to install a suitable M.2 SSD:

Yeah, the screen is really poor for a £700 laptop:

"Display – Last Decade’s TN Technology
Evidently, Apple is still equipping its Air with the well-known 13.3-inch TN panel with a highly reflective coating. At this size, its resolution of only 1440x900 translates to a pixel density 128 PPI, which is not only fairly low when compared to Apple’s own Retina displays, for example its 227 PPI 13-inch MacBook Pro, but also the 1920x1080 FHD panels that have become more common in the last few years. The comparison with the MacBook 12, with its 12-inch 2304x1440 resolution (226 PPI) display, makes it painfully obvious how outdated and terrible the Air’s display really is, and how crisp and clear a panel can be in 2017. This is most obvious when looking at text, where the Air’s lack of sharpness results in blurry shading along the edges. When the MacBook Air was first introduced, TN panels were still quite common. Unfortunately, the latest iteration still features the exact same TN panel, which means significantly reduced viewing angles on the one hand, but also lower response times on the other. With our new measuring equipment, we have found the black-to-white response time to be 28.4 milliseconds, and grey-to-grey took only 52.4 milliseconds...
it suffers from significant color and brightness distortions that TN panels are famous for, and vertical viewing angles are very poor. Those of you who are used to either smartphone or notebook IPS panels will suffer immensely. Horizontal viewing angles are somewhat better. Combined with the highly reflective coating, the poor viewing angles make it very difficult to find an ideal display position and angle."

You can make the argument that you don't need more than 128GB for your usage.
However, I just bought a 430GB SSD for my 2009 Macbook Pro for around £50.
430GB Deal

There is no excuse for 128GB in 2017 especially at the Apple's prices.

I bought a Chinese brand SSD ... It seems OK so far. Fingers crossed.
I have never heard of that brand before, it was worth a try. I put aside my current hybrid hdd in a nice anti-static bag, just in case.
Current recommendation:

If you've got the money, splash out for the entry level MacBook Pro.

If you don't, save up for it (or something else).

This was a great laptop in its day, one of the best arguably.

But with those specs from the screen resolution and quality, to the massively outdated processor and no force touch trackpad, there's way too much sacrifice being made.

In 2018, for ~£700 you deserve a lot better.
