you can still customise the ones from the apple edu store.. add 68.40 for more RAM

Would anyone know the cost of building a machine with the same components minus the apple logo? Just interested...

What model year is this? Is it the same as the one's sold direct from Apple?

yeah i know how to do it but 3 years warranty?

3 Years AppleCare hardware support is included in all Edu purchases.

At checkout you'll be offered AppleCare but ignore it, it's only software support.

Is this really true that no ID check is needed ordering online? They won't ask for anything once purchased etc? Thanks

Cartman1 - it is. I ordered one 3 days ago using my gmail address on their edu site. Got the discount and is on its way to me now.

Can you point me to a website that allows me to buy a laptop 1 inch thick, glass touch pad, full aluminium chassis 10hr battery life, 1kg weight, backlit keyboard etc etc etc?

Please post a link to a cheaper ultraportable laptop with similar specs...

I'm no Apple fan (I own nothing from them other than an iPod classic), but the MBA is still a cut above anything HP or Dell produce.

Yes student discount is 14%. My daughter bought one from Apple shop two days ago and got three years warranty for about £50 too as she is s student

The £50 3 year warranty is for extended telephone support, the hardware comes with a 3 year warranty on the Edu store.

The thing is if the Mac could effectively run windows then I would definately buy it. Everything I use requires windows.

Dual booting the mac is possible but it has compatibility issues and battery + display problems according to reviews.

Why can't they make something like this for Windows!

Macbook Air has no compatibility and display problems I am aware of. A retina product might be a different story owing to DPI scaling not being great on Windows, but the 13-inch air only has a 1440x900 display and Windows operates perfectly fine on mine - even the Thunderbolt port works.

I also run Parallels in OSX which allows me to run both operating systems side by side.

I spent years buying refurb Dells (high-end products like XPS etc) but my 2012 MacBook Air is the best laptop I've ever owned, whether it's running OSX, Windows or both.

Spend £200 extra and buy a MacBook retina

there was a guy in vauxhall conference** who made more tackles than sergio aguero last season. is he a better player?
or can stats misrepresent performance when taken out of context?

and please - like just about everyone who moans about this - can you please avoid throwing out these comments without any actual evidence? as because once you start ramping up the specs on a poorly designed and manufactured windows pile of junk, you start getting into apple pricing territory anyway. I know, because it's happened to me every time i've tried to buy something half decent

**sorry, stopped paying attention to footy in the 90s so not sure what it's called now, but seeming as we're not too strict on up-to-date and accurate facts, I thought it would be easier to just post it rather than google for the truth

They were on the right lines a few years ago with the Asus Zenbook. My mate picked one up brand new for £500. The irony is that at the high end, Windows laptops have got chunkier and heavier over the last few years as OEMs have pushed touchscreens, so with a small spec boost and a price drop, the MBA stands out by a mile in this sector of the market.

This is not strictly true. The edu warranty is tied to the purchasing user. Full Applecare is tied to the machine and hence massively increases the resale value if you decide to sell it after a couple of years. It is worth going to the higher education site through one of the easily accessible external links (google it) and then adding the Applecare for 50 quid which is much reduced from what it normally costs to add it.

It's £929 on Apple's site (£849 for 4GB) so really only £80 saving, unless people were actually buying at £1049 from Currys.

There is a 8gb MacBook for slightly more on Amazon. Is this a better choice?
