That makes absolutely no sense at all! The only compromise being made is in your head! In 3years time what kind of an idiot would spend a lot on a laptop with a smaller storage than a flagship smartphone? And £200 extra for the 256GB version? You must be in love with the brand and their marketing meaningless words.

I wouldn’t say that. I can’t my data analysis on my iPad but can on excel on my Mac.

Overpriced, not repairable machines everying is soldered on to main board, evan the ssd and memory, so any parts fail you had it, compared to xps dell and similar models they still separate the ssd and memory which can be upgraded, I know work in laptop repair and sell components for.

They tend to be very reliable anyway, and OSX totally seals the deal.
Not in my experience
I have plenty of 2017 /2016 faulty motherboards at workshop, selling the plastics and plamrest on ebay

RAM on 13" XPSs is soldered and cannot be upgraded, same as this.
SSDs is a different matter- upgrade-able in XPSs but Apple shot themselves in the foot with the "everything soldered in 2016" design - hence the rumor of new ore upgradable MB Pros being released this year.

Drink spillages? Most common reason for them to die, along with dedicated graphics chip failures, but that only affects 15" models of course.

You have clearly never used a Mac or OSX. Absolutely no connection to smartphone storage, they both do completely different jobs.

My 2013 macbook air is still giving me the same fluid performance as when it was new! Mac trackpad is the best and that alone justify its price. with Mac you buy one laptop in 6 years or longer whereas Windows laptops need replaced every 3 years!
I’d recommend buying this from John Lewis or Apple for the warranty and consumer right acknowledgement. I’m on my 3rd keyboard repair as the fix for the new butterfly keyboard didn’t work. The entire bottom shell has been replaced this time which I hope is a longer term fix. If my keys go again, It’s going to be an x1 carbon for me.
For anyone interested, I've just ordered the 256gb model via Very on a 12 months BNPL. £1300 with £150 credited back.

The points you make are reasons why I've gone back to the 13.3" 2017 macbook air.
I'd like to be able to upgrade components if I'd like to, I don't like the butterfly keyboard on the newer models, I don't like using dongles, and I don't believe apple's pricing provides value at this price point or higher.
Sadly, the trade off is putting up with a non retina screen.

No mate I have personally 4 laptops form 2012 vaio t series 2013 and a dell latitude all upgraded to ssd, no failures working at full performance all i5 4th gen and 3rd. Certain Windows laptops just a reliable as apple, dell are especially good there business models go on forever and can be Repaired, apple ain't as good especially the new 2018 onwards, the previous 2013 and 2014 were good, have seen the cost of replacing a screen for 2017 or 2018 models? 650 older one are 350, your average windows laptop screen cost £40 and £25 labour big difference, so ownership and maintenance off windows laptop cheaper.

I think he was probably referring to the software more than anything.

But look, here's the thing, people who would buy this don't want to buy a 3 inch thick Thinkpad (ThickPad?) and have to upgrade the hardware every couple of years, they want a Macbook Air with MacOS.

The thing I don't like about these is the keyboards. I'd replace the Mac mini I have with the Air in a instant if the KB wasn't so rubbish.

Let's pretend what you said is indeed right. £1079 for 6 years and £300 for 3 years?

Do not compare MacBooks to budget windows laptops. As explained to you by the other person who replied you, there are windows laptops that last as long as MacBooks.

I'd rather use the MacBook Pro for specific applications.

128gb at this price is really poor from apple, apple buy these ssd chips in the 1000s so it would cost more then few quid more to add 256
I have a MacBook which I brought from eBay back in 2013 and I have to confess I’d never go back to windows! I think I paid roughly £5-600 back then and it’s still going strong now, I run my business from it, it holds charge well.....it’s just awesome! My son and daughter have a windows desktop for homework etc and I can’t stand it!! I think it’s just a case of what suits who basically. I think apple make things really easy for people like myself who are by no means experts on computers!!

Just to counter balance your comment about Dell business laptops being reliable, I've had 2 Dell latitudes at work that both had severe reliability issues. I personally wouldn't touch them for a personal device.
Wow, what a rip off.
Ridiculous price for a low spec laptop.
Hope the screens on these are a bit more robust than 2017 version. Mine cracked with everyday use and currys/apple refused to repair. Not a mark in the laptop otherwise.
