Don't really know what it does. Media player?

Update:

Hmmm, ok, getting some info:

apple.com/app…tml

So it connects wirelessly to your router and also connects to your TV to download and play video and audio content from iTunes, if I'm not mistaken.

that aint the same one on the apple site as thats the newer one have added the details from play's website

The new version is £99 from apple which just streams with no internal HDD.

I think this is the older model which they are probably trying to clear as the new version is out in the next week or two.

the new version cant be hacked. this one can be hacked to work as a media centre without being limited to itunes etc.

I think you mean "hasn't been" instead of "can't"

Which is understandable, given that it's not out yet.

It's not likely as it has no hdd and no usb port.

Neither does the iphone...

I actually have one of these media players. Its a great little box BUT not in the way that Apple intended you to use it. Its USB port at the back is disabled other than for the techs and you have to buy everything as I understand it via itunes store. In order to get this box to work as the sort of media centre we all want to have it has to be hacked. If you are good (and i mean at unix level) with computers and particularly mac computers then you can download and install all of the necessary apps onto this box to make it work the way you want it to or alternatiavely if you are like me and you are not at that level (or you can not be bothered) then you need a USB stick and to spend an additional USD$50 on ATV flash which you can get at firecore.com/atv…ash.

All of the above said, now that I have the box working and allowing me to use that USB port at the back I absolutely LOVE it! I have even managed to get an app to use my new iphone as a remote control for it which was quite neat

So its a 50/50 for me. Dont be put off by my post...I do like this box which I have had for a good year now. BUT be aware of its limitations and what you will have to do in order to make it work like other media centres.

The new Apple TV is running an iteration of iOS, definitely worth waiting for that and seeing what the community can make it do

this just seems like a huge waste of money. I can already rent moves from blockbuster or sky movies and I cna already stream pics, vids and music from my pc to the tv via windows media centre. This is yet another piecve of crap released by apple to try and make a quick buck. i wish they would stop doing crap like this and concentrate on making their good products even better, i.e. the iphone 4 with it's signal issues.

I dont like the Apple TV, but that post is ridiculous. It's crap because you can already goto blockbuster? Jesus X)

Is this used as a freeview recorder? or just a streamer using itunes? Also do the purchases need to be acquired through itunes for them to stream?

I would get this if this recorded virgin or sky, but as it doesn't, screw this.

Like with everyhthing apple, will get this from america. Works around 60 off pounds givent he exchange rate.

I just download the shows i want to see from the net. Thus I don't have to pay Sky or the others... And the Sapphire program downloads all the meta details and pic from IMDB etc so I know what each file is if and when I want to view it. If you like Sky then thats fine but I don't have to pay a subscription ;-)

Well you can rent from Blockbuster at present, but they've just filed for bankruptcy in the US....

Complicated. And of course, if it borks, your 1 year warranty is worthless, I'd assume.

You mean the iphone with a 16 or 32gb hard disk right?

Technically, it's flash memory - which the ATV DOES have, otherwise where would the OS go/be updated?

I'd buy one of these as an XBMC frontend if it did over 720p. In stock condition it's crap, but for XBMC it's great for the bedroom.

andyellis_2000: You don't need to pay $50USD to hack the appletv, you can do it free

Baron: It does bork it but it is trivial to revert back to a standard apple image if need be, caveat: if the hardware is borked you cant revert back to the standard image and claim warrenty - a bad situation for some.

Note:
i have used one of these for years with xbmc installed on it, grabbing my media off linux, mac and windows machines. works really well - however times have changed and there are problems with the apple tv, namely it struggles to play hd content back and i have never got it to work properly using hdmi on some tv's (some work, some dont).

my opinions are that this is a good deal relative to its previous price, however, if i wanted a discrete media player that works well, I would probably drop £200ish and get a "popcorn hour" device instead as it can handle hd and is more open for development in the future. this version of the apple tv is being deprecated for a fully network streaming version which imho won't be as good for hackability and expension.

I've been using one for XBMC too, but it's still underpowered. I'm putting my hopes in the boxee box. Much more elegant solution than popcorn hour IMO

LMAO! stupidest post of the week!
Do you work for blockbuster?!

hacking isn't defined as adding storage.

I have 2 (one flashed with software hacks and one with hacks + larger 500Gb HDD + crystal HD card for HD media playback through XBMC) .. great machines - small and quiet too!

..think it's a bit pricey though for the old model, I just paid $150 for the 160Gb in the US.

Check a well known auction site for BCM970012 , allows you to have 1080P from the Apple TV.

£146/99 piece of junk...

if you're going to hack it for XBMC, and this is still not powerful enough for HD, why not get an Xbox1 for about £20 (£50 with accessories). or if you do want HD, get some accelerated nettop like the Revo which is still around £150 and can do more..
this doesn't seem like good value.

I would just get something like the sony BDP-S370 blu-ray player or WD TV Live (prefer the sony as hasd blu-ray and better remote) and then use that to stream media of PC or NAS etc, or just external USB drive.... This just seems a waste of money to me

But the Xbox 1 looks freekin awful, most people wouldn't want that under there TV... Makes much more sence to just get a Media Player in sub £100 mark as I put above

i'm talking about if you wan to run something free like XBMC. the sub £100 media players generally AFAIK can't (correct me if i'm wrong!) so you're stuck with whatever (good or bad) support they provide long term.

the point people are making above seemed to be to buy this AppleTV to mod it to run XBMC, i was pointing out alternatives for that that seem better value.
and btw you put the Xbox in your stack, its black, you only see the front - if that still bothers you recase it or something. change the fan. size may still be a problem, granted. really the only weakness of the Xbox1, size aside, is that it won't be HD (actually it will upscale SD to 720p and also play true 720p content if specially prepared). but then neither is the ATV apparently!

seems like a relevant place to plug xTV (Apple TV clone skin for XBMC which i sometimes help out a bit with) forum.xbmc.org/sho…576

another load of apple ****

Good price - compared to the rest in Google

with the lack of video codecs this thing supports just like the newer version I have no idea why anyone would wanna buy this. Swear this is just for apple fanboys!!

Couldn't agree more - so many products on the market that do more for less. Of course, they don't have a half eaten apple on the front...

What a load of rubbish, WDTV Live all the way for me.

kobashi

It is trivial to install extra codecs, a few clickety clicks, a usb stick, and 10 mins to brew a tea.

Apple hate. How cliché...

There must be a lot of fanboys about, this deal should be really chilly. An obsolete product that was never any good even when launched. This was only ever reasonable when XBMC or Boxee were hacked onto it. Lacks full HD so really a yesterday product, at a ridiculous price. As had already been mentioned a £20 original XBOX with XBMC can do more than this. The Revo is a flexible alternative. Why not look at the ACRyan Play!On range or the Asus O!Play both offer so much more for so much less. Anyone giving this heat really doesn't have a clue.

Wait for the next gen AppleTV. It's released in a couple of days and costs only £99. The new model won't have a hard drive, though will have some form of flash storage, but that's because it's intended to be used with iTunes rentals rather than purchases.

The main draw of the new AppleTV will the be the Airplay feature which allows you to transfer any media in a compatible format from Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or PC. Supported iOS apps will allow you to push video that you're watching on your iDevice to the AppleTV. This current model of AppleTV is not likely to support the new iteration of Airplay.

For a device intended for purchasing iTunes content this model has too small a harddrive anyway, a few seasons of your favourite tv programs can take up tens of gigabytes very quickly.

TLDR: save £45 and wait for the new one.
