Very nice deal may have to take a bite

What does it do? Same as the cheaper Chromecast?
Edited by: "Picard123" 8th Oct 2014

Good price for an Apple TV... Although there is an Apple event at the end of October where they may announce an updated version. But I guess John Lewis would refund you within a month of purchase if that was the case.

What does it do? Same as the cheaper Chromecast?

Mostly, but it's all fairly locked down to Apple's own store and integrates will with Macs, iPhones and iPads.

I nmy opinion: As a deal it's hot, but as technology it's cold due to better (cheaper) options out there

I would like to know too. My knowledge is that you pay for rentals or purchase of films.

It allows you to stream media from an iPhone, iPod (touch), iPad and any Mac directly to your TV. You can mirror your Mac's display over to your TV or display pictures/movies/music on your TV from the i devices. You can also use it for YouTube, Netflix or to rent media from iTunes. It's very similar to the Chromecast but for Apple's line up, I'm a big fan of it myself especially as it is so easy to user. At £69.99 it's pretty good

I have a couple of these and really rate them. I know they dont do everything but I've put them to work in my house and I think they do a great job for the following:

Mirror your iphone/pad/mac screen to your Apple TV wirelessly.
Push video and audio content to your Apple TV from your device (your apple tv can even output its audio to different speakers/airplay devices)
Play all my DVDs I ripped into iTunes (use mp4 format and you can't go wrong), with the album artwork it looks great
Netflix (we use this a lot)
Youtube (dont use it much)
Now TV app (if you have it).
iTunes video store (rent movies for about £3.99, but for about £13)
Trailers app (it's ok, shows all the latest film trailers from indy+major studios).
Photos (can see your photostream from iphones).

Remember, it's 2 years old and might be updated in a few weeks (rumours).

Hope this helps.

Have apple stopped including a £25 iTunes gift card when you buy it direct from them? That seemed a better deal.

If I'm running XBMC on a jailbroken mini retina can I mirror to this or does the 'App' have to support it?

You can mirror anything. Even with things like MovieBox, you can play the stream on your tv whilst using Whatsapp for example.

I agree. Just sold mine to be replaced by Amazon TV which I got on the recent deal. I may in turn sell this to recoup my £49 if an iPad 4 is released with significant developments.

That being said, I bought mine from the Apple store as a refurb, because Apple Refurbs are practically brand new, with the word refurbished on the box. They come up every so often, just check every 3 days. They're £57 delivered if I remember correctly.

I though certain Apps, the Sky Go for example dont allow mirroring or have I just made that up?

I voted HOT! I saw this deal yesterday but didnt put this one thought most people will vote cold....Apple have an event this month and might make a new version but if not im buying this, only problem I have got is theres no iplayer! Also I have a 2010 macbook that doesnt support airplay but airparrot should help with that

You never know, we may see a new Apple TV in the same presentation in a week or so....

I have one and it is really useful. I don't have the BT Sport channel but do have the BT Sport app on my iphone and it allows me to send the video wirelessly to my Apple TV and watch the games that way - the picture quality is excellent.

I also use it lots for Netflix, YouTube and streaming home video and photos from my phone. There is also a Now TV app although I don't use that so cannot comment. If you have an iphone/ipad or Mac it is a really great bit of kit but if you don't probably not so much.

Voting cold: Why,

1. New Apple TV 4 on the horizon to be released before Christmas is the rumours

2. The Apple TV 3 cannot be jailbroken

3. The Apple TV 3 is pretty dire. It is easily the weakest of the Smart TVs. My recommendation is to buy either a PS3 or if you want compact then an Amazon Fire TV when its released in a fortnight. Or even the Roku 3 is much better than the Apple TV but I would still say don't buy the Roku unless you can find it for around £50.

I have owned a Apple TV 3, I offered it for free to a relative between a choice of my Roku 3 or Apple. They chose the Roku so I just sold it this weekend to CEX and am pleased I did.

I have a Chromecast and was a bit disappointed with the streaming of videos. It lagged too much. I don't know if anyone else had the same issue. I reverted back to using the mini display port cable.

good downgrade for chromecast owners

same problem. It lags way too much, to the point when mirroring that content is unwatchable. but then can't expect much more for £18.

Streaming via Airplay is great on the Apple TV, that's what I mostly use it for. Not tried Chromecast. You can stream anything at all that plays on your phone or Mac so not limited to just what is on itunes.

I had that problem until I used the extender they give with the chromecast which served to increase speed dramatically

Just get a Now TV box for £10. Job done!

OK if you have blinkers on and only buy Apple stuff because it only works with other Apple stuff. If you choose best of breed NAS/Computer/Phone/Tablet then this won't work with most of it, and won't play almost anything you are likely to download without transcoding to the minimal set of formats it does understand.
Good deal if you really want this particular device and you have a houseful of Apple, otherwise there are many, many cheaper/better alternatives.

Depends on what you want from the device. For screen sharing from a Mac the Chromecast doesn't even come close.

Is there really a difference, it's still the 3rd iteration of the Apple TV. To the consumer, both are the same product. They just changed the way it is produced.

Not sure about Sky Go, but I've never encountered that problem with any app I have. You can set airplay on your phone or ipad to streaming (Will just show on the TV whenever media is playing, including music), or Mirroring (everything from the homescreen onwards will be shown).

paulj48

No.... but it does get you iPlayer on your TV on the cheap. You'll still need to invest in an Apple TV.

FFS! What a load of moaners on here.

If you have a few Apple devices then this is perfect for you, if you don't it's not... Airplay

I have both and both are pretty good highly recommend flixanity.is for apple tv owners allows you to airplay movies/tv shows via iPhone and iPad as for chromecast try popcorntime.io AKA netfilx for us pirates! there is nothing better out there

I no longer buy any devices that are locked into one store, life is too short for this kind of restriction. So a good deal on a bad idea I'm afraid.

you can't jailbreak this model.

I know use mine with the allcast app for Android to stream tv shows and movies, much like a chromecast device. If that's all you would use it for then you're better off getting the cheaper chromecast.
