Good piece but might be worth waiting till autumn as wouldn't be surprised if they bring out a newer version then. And it's not likely to get more expensive.

I bought one a while back and it's still shrink wrapped a drawer. Sure I'll use it one day though

Not sure why apple are dragging their feet with the next gen Apple TV....... It has been expected now for over a year.
I'm hoping it's something really special!

Great deal on this though OP, have some heat.

Cheap, but apple have been left in the dust with streaming boxes. I've had an apple tv3 since release and been hoping one day it'll be jailbroken, but never happened. I now run a fire stick with Kodi running on it. Apple TV is unplugged and sitting in a draw now

Me too. Was fun for a while to use US iTunes but with Kodi its all there for nothing.

That's a great price, have some heat!

I love Apple TV but haven't used mine since getting a Chromecast. Apple don't consider ATV's mainstream enough to prioritise plus with the recent advances in 4k TVs and wifi a/c I think they are waiting for things to settle down and look at what the competition offers before bringing out a new version.

I don't think apple really want to make a cheap streaming device, I would have thought their next one would be a more all in one device that can be more integral. Surprised they haven't made a proper TV. I know it's slim profit margins with TV's but I know huge amounts of people would buy an Apple Television just for the logo. Especially if it looked like a Mac.

good price but in reality it's ancient in the hardware department, i would go for the amazon fire tv box over this any day, the apple tv is laggy as hell and crap

Just noticed it's £49 in my local tesco too! I'm still not persuaded though!

Apple's cack too locked down, buy an android box for the same price with more features

+1 for FireTV at least it can do full MPEG-4 Profile 4.1 which the ATV can't.

Yeah ATV way behind now with quad core android devices readily available with much more flexibility. FireTV is a great bit of kit and quality hardware,

Its hard to believe who far behind apple are with tv streaming ,which is the future, no sky dish or Arial everything will stream and apple are so **** up with a watch that nobody gives a toss about unless your a complete ****

I only use mine for the WWE network its great for that but not much else to watch.

I have an ATV3. It is only ever used for Netflix, as our Minix Neo X8-H Plus (vastly higher specced) does not have a profile that allows Netflix at 1080p, it tends towards sticking at 480p. Otherwise I'd have the Apple TV in a drawer.

I'd normally buy a FireTV stick to fill that gap and run Kodi/Netflix combo but the lack of Play store access is a show-stopper for me. I've been buying android apps for many years and I'm not having my supply cut off just because of some capricious shopfront.

So, unless you want very much to use Airplay for audio/video and don't mind the absence of Amazon Prime streaming, it might be prudent to wait for the Roku 4 or some other next generation powerhouse.

was looking at getting one of these as want to mirror screen my iPad onto tv via bluetooth.

is there a better and cheaper option (with a link if possible) othwise I'll just go with this.

what's a draw?

Is there any point to this thing?

Never understand the negativity towards the Apple TV - it's designed to let you access your iTunes and Apple content and it does it well. If you want to partake in illegal activity, then install Play Box HD on your iOS device and AirPlay to the ATV

Agreed i have Chromecast and others yet just prefer the Apple TV and the kids and myself have iPads so we all get same films on them from my account so i don't have all boxes from disc films cluttering my home.
If where on holiday or even in a different room we still have all films to view, Its always stable never crashed or had any problems ( same with iPad and iPhone )

You could strap it to your arm & call it a watch.

android boxes are better. Even amazon boxes have restrictions. just get a tronsmart mxiii 2gb. does more for the same price. if you get the mxiii plus or s82 plus from beelink there is a perfect mirroring app preinstalled. they are a bit more because of slightly newer chip. s812 instead of s802.

hoping this will go down more on prime day

android is better.

Had one of these for about 2 weeks. Airplay from our Macbook Pro always seemed jittery. Used it mainly for Netflix and NowTV (as it was supposed to be the only box/app that streamed NowTV live channels in 720p, but never did!). No iPlayer/ITV On demand/4OD/Demand5 apps limited it's use significantly. Just got a NowTV box in the end!
However, on the positive side, it integrated really easily with our other Apple products

From a MacBook, you're mirroring the screen, and that will almost always cause stutter. I had that even via a wired Ethernet connection. regular airplay from an iOS device works without any stutter whatsoever and is incredibly easy to do.
The box itself doesn't have loads of apps, but it's so much easier to use if you have an iPad or iPhone to airplay from. i had an old iPhone 4 that I jailbroke and put all my media/streaming apps on. This sat in my living room and was incredibly easy to use. Much better than trying to type stuff in with a directional control pad.
For £50, it's decent value, but I'm gonna buy an extra second had one for £30.
Also, set yourself up with a US AppleID, DNS service and get a loving from any friend/family in the US and you can stream loads of US content. I have HBO, Showtime, NBC Sports and load more, so I get ALL 380 premier league games, great TV shows and a huge number of movies, all for just $5 per month.

I tried the same setup but tell me how you had all services for $5 month? HBO is $15 on its own! Any info appreciated, cheers.

Anyone with a scooby doo, you just need to jailbreak your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch and put kodi/movie box/cartoonHD etc and the world is your oyster to airplay to your ATV3. There's plenty of apps for skysports BTsports to airplay as well

Tell me more about this please Can I just sign up with any old US address? My US PSN ID lives in Beverley Hills 90210, but how do you pay for it/order it etc without knowing anyone in the US?

Thanks

I have a friend in the US who subscribes to cable. Along with her package, she can also stream content from the channels she subscribes to. She was happy to give me her HBO Go, NBC, Show Time and other login details for free. As a result, I just pay $5 per month for a DNS service which bypasses the geo-location checks, and I'm ready to watch all those services form anywhere in the world.
You need a US Apple ID to be able to view those apps on the Apple TV home screen too, but that takes 6 mins to setup.
Hope this helps.

As long as you fund your US iTunes account and a SmartDNS service, you can sign up for Hulu and other services.
