I paid less for this last year from QVC and when you consider that its being replaced by a new model that does a lot more its not a very good deal at all.

I know everyone seems to love Archos media players but I wasn't too impressed with the one I bought. It hardly played any .avi files and the sound quality on the player was rubbish, even with ear phones in. It took ages to load anything and switching between the menus also took a long time. The battery died very quickly and after 6 months it wouldn't stay on for more than 30 minutes which doesn't strike me as very portable. Fair play, this was 3 years ago and all media players have come on a lot, but it still makes me weary of buying another.

I love my archos 5 and this is a good price, yes a new one is coming, but it's not here yet.

I agree. I had an archos 605 and the battery life, sound quality and file formats accepted was not good.

Sorry but if I cannot afford something outright (barring houses and maybe cars) then it is something I would avoid. If I loose my job etc etc, I don't want even more problems to worry about financing a PVP. Personally the deal is middling but with the 5 android tablet on the way it makes this one obsolete in a few weeks plus the never version is expected to retail for about the same anyway. So would pass this up and wait as no doubt there will be a lot better codec support on an open source android powered device, even with the Archos lock downs.

Oh and advancedmp3players.co.uk do a price beat policy so probably worth checking there first as you might just get it even cheaper anyway.

I love my Archos 5 BUT I hate the fact that Archos still charge extra for the codecs. After buying the codecs from a popular auction side, my Archos 5 plays any video file I throw at it and the battery lasts about 3.5hrs when watching movies.

Its a great gadget but make sure you budget for the codecs and the mini dock to charge it fully in 2hrs as it only comes with a USB charger which takes forever and a day to charge it.

I'd rather buy a netbook with a 7/8hr battery to use just as a portable media player for traveling/commuting etc No trouble with codecs and will play just about anything. Yes I realise a netbook is bigger, but these are not exactly pocketable.

At least they can go on a belt pouch with some ease or a large set of jean pockets as my better half does with his 605wifi. Which he does quite happily most days of the week for well over a year now.

That said I would like you to try find a netbook with a touch screen for under £300 with 7-8hrs battery life.
