A New Release from Archos, the Archos 80 Cobalt. Never heard of it until last night when looking for a tablet for my Dad in my local Tesco Spytty Newport.

Spotted this in Tesco and after testing it out with browsing and watching videos I thought it was perfect for his needs of browsing Autotrader and eBay plus the 4:3 display is more user friendly for him.

Possibility of extra discounts are obviously available at Tesco, I used a £5 off £50 spend voucher so paid £94 plus Clubcard points.

HOT or COLD? You decide. Hope it helps someone.

Yes it has physical buttons for power, volume up\down.

I am new to Android so prob not the best to review the device but all I can say is I am not disappointed. It is very responsive, fast and there are no screen issues. Sound is tinny so best used with headphones. And it takes about 10 seconds to boot from fully shutdown but instant from standby. It utilises active wallpapers without any impact on web browsing, playing games or streaming movies etc The screen quality overall is faultless. Playing HD movie files look very good.

I have installed a few apps such as Netflix, Skygo, iPlayer, Skype, Evernote & Dead Trigger and all work perfectly. Web browsing is faultless and at times faster than my iPad. I have not noticed any apps that say they have problems.. anything in particular you want me to install?

I have installed a 64GB SD Class 10 card and it works without issue. Taken photo's which are not the best but I suppose for a 2mp camera they are as perfect as they can be and the camera seems to be very slightly off angle by say 2mm so you have to very slightly tilt the device to get a straight picture. Video is however very good quality when recorded from the same camera.

No updates are available as yet so for now it is ISC 4.0.4

All in all I have recommended my brother in law save himself some money and buy my niece one of these instead of the samsung.

Specs look decent but they usually are on the relatively new Archos/Arnova's - it's the build quality that bothers me.

Well I have had it out the box and it feels sturdy enough next to my Ipad, All I can say is go to Tesco if your interested and try it out.

Yeah I'm just going on previous experience on other models. I have not voted for that reason.

I know what your saying, this is leaps beyond their previous Android 2.2 Tablet build quality. In fact they had one of those on display and it was rubbish to hold in your hand, felt creaky.

Same thing as the Pipo Smart S1 which is Android Jelly bean and a few sheckles cheaper (_;)
amazon.co.uk/gp/…294

I have one of last years Archos tabs and it is still going very well although only Android 2.2, build quality of the Archos is not too bad if looked after properly

Looks a decent enough spec for the money, would have to have a good play with it in store if I was looking to buy one, the older tablets were made from tissue paper and snot and the version of Android on them was hopeless.

also the display is 800*480 which is quite poor a higher res display is much better and worth the extra cost also no back camera if that maters to you but it does have hdmi

I have an old Archos 80G9 tablet running ICS which although plasticy has lasted ok being used by me and my kids. Screen is poor though with terrible viewing angles, also get some lag and being only 8gb on board memory you have to be careful what you install (cannot transfer apps to SD card) so dont know if all that is improved on this new tablet.

Looks good for under £100 though...

Looks good for under a ton, heat added!

thanks

On further inspection this looks quiet nice actually, not available through Tesco direct thou so no £10 off for new email addy, I'll have to hunt the local store and have a look at it in person, would be perfect for my 9 year old from Santa

Heat added

good specs for the price, HOT

I would have been lucky to get a box of Lego from Santa when I was 9! oO

Head added, Good deal and Archos have improved the build quality of their tablets leaps and bounds in recent months!

The build quality of the new ranges of Archos tablets is actualy decent. This tablet for that price is a real bargain.

"1024 x 768 pixels" in the spec or am I missing something

Can't even find this for sale anywhere on the internet! Some info and reviews but nowhere selling.

I am interested in this- thanks op

In this review from a day or two ago- they say Jelly Bean is installed not ICS. Archos are pretty good at updating OS so might get Jelly Bean sooner than later if not already.

He's talking about the alternative one posted after the OP's.

I'm a big Archos fan of old and l wish them well with this product. It's clearly an attempt to not be left behind by the success of the Nexus 7 and Kindle/Kindle HD. Price is everything in this sector and at £99 it feels about right.

I'd recommend stretching to the Nexus 7 if you can afford it - better spec, better performance, better build quality, probably better future support and longevity. But if your budget is tight, the Archos has a more than decent spec and is worthy of consideration. Hot from me.

Heat added, going to see if they have any instock at lunchtime

Don't forget this is 8" 4:3 ratio- so will have over 40% more viewable screen than a 7 incher. And Archos have a close relationshipt with Google so they tend to run unchanged OS and get updates sooner than later. I just watched a Euro review and they say this is out in Jan 2013 with Jelly Bean so maybe Tesco have managed to get it earlier than the rest of the world. Or the first lot were rubbish and Tesco bought then dead cheap?
Hopefully this is doesn't have the bad build of recent models- my Archos 70 IT is still going fine without any issues at all.

Doeis it has 3G for mobile to allow internet access while you are on the move ??
Thanks

No, it is solely a Wi Fi Device.

I've just missed out on the Samsung Tab £50.00 cashback deal from Currys (ended yesterday - curse my hesitation), so this may be an alternative. I used to own an Archos, and I didn't rate it much, although their customer service was excellent enough for me to pop in Tesco and have a look to see if it's improved. Hot from me - thanks for posting.

That review is brilliant X) absolute fookwit of a man, mad me LOL

Thankyou... just what I needed!

Looks good on paper, would it be a better buy than a Kindle Fire as i have just purchased one for someone as i could not stretch to £168 for a nexus 7, will take the Kindle back if this is a better option.

How is the build quality, may have a look in Tesco, thanks for sharing,

SkilledNutter

No, it is solely a Wi Fi Device.

SkilledNutter- does it have physical volume and power off buttons ? Have you gone to the menu- about- check for updates to see if you can get Jelly Bean yet?

Also no realy bleedin' reviews are out there as these seem hot off the boat. Go on then mate.. give us a review ? Speed ok? Screen ok? Press the back does it distort the screen? Google play- lots of app saying not compatible? Video playback good ( Archos usually are very good media devices) - don't pay for extra codecs just use MX Player or something.

Aaaah, so I was missing something oO

Why cant i see it in tesco? I want this!!

I think this looks great - I would probably choose it over the Kindle Fire. I have an S3 and iPad for the time being though so until my 3 year old drops the iPad.........I ought to give this a miss!

So how do I find out if a store near me has this in stock? Other than going there.

Phoning them? Will be in an extra store i guess.

I watched that guy on youtube and the fact he wasn't sure what type of screen or what size screen the tablet had, and that He thought it had hdmi. Tells me he may not have done as much research as one would hope lol

Heat added looks good for the price
