Isnt this the one that was £99 on sale 2 weekends ago? When they were doing Archos deal or somethin like that? Wouldnt mind one but saving up for a car. Maybe if I sell my spare flashed Xbox!

wow i have one of these from 3 years ago, great player, just surprised theyre still available...

edit: yep, there's been no more firmware updates since 1.5.13

I have an 80gb one of these, got it from QVC a few years ago. Its a very good machine BUT it is very heavy, you can't use this as an everyday mp3 player.
I take mine on holiday, but don't use it much apart from that.

can this handle divx/xvid files just dragged and dropped without converting to mp4? looks a good deal to me.

I think you need heaps of codecs

Mine won't without converting the files, but it may be that this has had a firmware update

Yes this plays most of em ,This is a good way of watching downloads( ahem ) on your TV,

i wouldn't buy it now, no AC3 support, no subtitle support, pain the ****.. if you dont mind converting still a great screen etc though.

It was £97 about 10 days ago at Cdiscount 6 hour sale. I went for the Archos 7 as AV500 is a very old model (2005). But very good price so voting hot.

i got one of these and it has played all xvid/divx ive thrown at it so far

I got the 100gb one years ago , great machine (ok a bit brick like compared to new ones)
Its played everything that I have stuck on it so far.
buttons can be a bit fiddly.
not a bad price for the 30gb version though and no extras to buy like the new ones,

these don't take addon codecs.. they don't take extra codecs, period. which is a problem.

you can pretty much only play mpeg4 asp (divx, xvid - and no qpel etc!) with mp3 audio in avi containers.
wmv is supported, in a very limited way (old versions, low resolutions only)

no ac3 support
no mp4, no mkv
no subtitles (need to hard sub anything)
video over 700 pixels wide has wierd blocking issues
doesn't even properly support vbr mp3 (a/v sync problems)

obviously, no x264 or aac or any new stuff. no dts or ogg or flac or...
those are the major issues i've found, there are lots more

beware.. if you don't like geeking around for hours transcoding avoid.. i should know, i'm prepping mine for a trip right now.

if you do your own rips in controlled conditions its ok (just use Fairuse Wizard).
if you like to download and play random stuff.. expect a lot to not work.

most annoying for me is not being able to fit an SSD to this, it would do amazing things to battery life.. (its keyed to the hdd it comes with).

/me goes back to virtualdubmod for another round of transcoding.

I voted Hot BTW.... I bought a creative Zen vision M 30 instead at the time i was looking at this...

vision m plays most files i have tried.. great for listening to everyday and then great to take on hols with an AV out cable and play vids on hotel TVs or during flights!

the zen vision m is not even in the same league as this. the archos are portable video players and recorders.. zen vision m is like an ipod. get a seperate player for music, these are too large and not as suited.

I didnt compare it... nor did i tell other people to get it instead of this..

look around for a 605 model if you have to get an old model archos
this was on sale a few weeks ago when i picked up an archos 5 from the site

Got one of these a couple of years ago from QVC - great screen for films and an excellent mp3/wav music player and portable sound recorder. Picture quality from TV recordings is pretty decent too. Have about 20 favourite films on mine and tons of music. Not so faffed about how photos look on it though as they are not quite the right format for the screen. I never go on holiday without it and unlike newer models it comes with a docking station.

Isn't the 605 a better model? I see that's back in stock at £99 from HMV.......therefore oted cold.

hehe, I think I must have just bagged the last one then! It came on offer last week at £99 and was back in stock from last night........expect it'll come back again in a few days.

Av500 is a great piece of kit for £100 it's a steal, plays all the divx and xvids i've tried. The screen is good and battery life is pretty good. Seriously wouldn't take a train, flight or bus ride without it.
True it is chunky, couple years old and the menu system is a little non-intuitive (you get used to it), but worth it to watch 24, lost, heroes, family guy on the go.
Also you can use the PSP charger to charge it.

For those who said it has supported EVERYTHING thrown at it, have any of you tried to play RM files on it?

I have a newer Archos and they are magnificent.

pros
-connect straight to a tv, anywhere in the world
-drag and drop avi video, mpeg, no more converting to psp for example

cons
-a little on the heavy side

doesnt play it, youll have to convert to mpeg/avi.
doesnt play mkv either as you would presume until you convert.

i outlined pretty much what it plays at end of 1st page (mpeg4 asp video and pcm/mp3 audio only really). because people saying it plays everything, clearly have no idea what everything means.

encoding is a crude div4 (opendivx derived?) implementation, pretty low quality.

in case that looked negative.. i love this device, its one of the greatest gadgets i've ever owned. because it became standard with various police forces and other groups there are tons of accessories (helmet cams etc). and touch wood mines going strong after 3 years and dozens of trips. i put a huge battery on it, makes it even bigger but its worth it for long haul. i usually ignore in flight entertainment systems because they're so annoying and use this *

..being careful what i watch because the screen has a very wide viewing angle and is very bright.

seems to be back in stock with another fiver off at 94.99
tempted to buy a spare.. if only you could change the hard drive.. (this would come with a 1.8" drive, the 60gb/100gb are 2.5").
actually just realised battery life would probably be better on the 30gb because of this.. but 30gb isn't much for movies. anyone tried running an external 2.5" drive off this? when i find my adapter i'll give it a go. probably would ruin battery life without an external power pack.
