why has it got a remote? its not likley you would watch the 7" screen further than arms length

Most Archos devices can be used as a PVR to record Sky/Freeview etc and watch it back via your main TV. A bit like a Sky+ but with manual recording, and using the 40Gb HD as you would Sky+

The remote is to control it from a distance when using it this way.

Kevin.

these really a great bit of kit - I have a 20gb version and as Kevin says you can video stuff from the telly and also connect it to the tv so you can watch downloaded content on your main telly.

SO MUCH BETTER than an ipod (although it is bigger)

I have the Archos 404 which records from any video source. I have given up recording to DVD and VHS since the recording quality is superior on the Archos (and no wasted discs!). With the right software you can transfer avi files to DVD (if you want to keep the program). The Archos will also read video and music files from an external hard drive. Best thing I've bought in a long while so would highly recommend the AV700.

The AV700 also contains a docking station and a small IR blaster that controls an input source (such as a Sky/Freeview box), so you can set recordings on a timer, and it'll automatically change the box to the right channel. Then you can play them back via your TV.

The price I see at the checkout is in Euros. Will I be charged by my credit card company to convert Euros into Sterling?

So I won't really know the actual price I am paying until I get my credit card bill. :-(

I see that with Delivery on top it comes to 272.39Euro = £185.73
I suppose its still a good price

Then add on the charge your credit card company makes.

I liked it better when I thought it was £170 but it turns out to be much more.

Another £15 isn't really much more. I remember when these first came out, they cost well over £300.

I can buy an 80 gig ipod for about £212. I know it has a a smaller screen and, that it doesn't have a TV tuner but ..... :?:

The only reason I am looking at this is because I'm going away for a while so it would come in handy. However, although it is a fairly good deal, the hidden charges make it less so and I'm now swithering. It was a certainty at £170 but, it is less attractive to me at closer to £200.

Well ]Amazon are charging £403.98 and ]this place wants £275 for a refurb. Still put off?

Sorry, but I'm afraid the extra cost does put me off and I won't be buying one.

Your loss then.

No loss - I'll be £200 better off.

Really thinking about buying this.
Looked on Youtube and saw some vids of it in action. Although they were in Spanish they showed off the features well.

Has anyone got one who can comment on how good the freeview is on the move, ie in a car? Its supposed to be good as it has twin tuners.

No it does not have twin tuners it has inputs for 2 aerials which should improve in-car reception. Unfortunately most so called car DTV aerials are useless as they are vertical whereas DTV is transmitted horizontally.

This is taken from the T3 review:

"To ensure a good signal, Archos has loaded the device with two antennae and two tuners working in parallel"

I guess they got it wrong! (again)

I don't recommend it. Resolution is to low for such a big screen. Video displayed looks like footage played on old ntsc screen plus everything you record, even 16:9 programs records as 4:3 and if you want to watch it on full screen it doesn't stretch it but zoom it so you loose some of it...

I think they mean the two tuners work in parallel to produce one more stable picture, rather than two indivitual feeds.

Hauppauge have recently brought out a Freeview USB stick which can do something similar on your PC, that however has the option of using it as a twin tuner device or using both tuners together to get a stronger signal. I'm waiting for one of those to arrive at the moment.

I've owned a couple of other Archos media devices which at the time I was quite impressed by in some ways. The software on the device I wasn't too keen on.

Whilst this a pretty good deal, I would caution those who are looking to buy a truly portable device. I was on the verge of buying an AV700 some time ago and extensively researched Archos products in various users forums. I eventually went for the AV500 30gb which I think cost me about 285GBP at the time. It seriously is the best and most versatile piece of kit I have ever bought. Smaller screen than the AV700 but much better screen resolution and superb build quality. It slips in a pocket quite easily and can be used relatively unobtrusively on planes, trains and automobliles! The same cannot be said of the larger screen model.

The AV500 can also be used as full function mp3 player, photo viewer (ideal for backing up digital camera when on holiday I find), PVR, external hard drive etc. etc.

I note that the Archos site has these refurbished for around 205GBP - seems a very good price and would be worth considering for what, in my view, is a better option than the AV700.

These are being sold off as the new model 704 wifi has just been released in conjunction last week with qvc's "todays special deal".
I ordered the new 80gb version from them with the pvr pack for @ £350.
Recieved it a few days ago and its brillaint. Can also be used as a wireless streamer of music/video. The screen is great also.
Check out the owners forum of archos stuff for further details on all models.
