I actually quite like it. I don't think it would be do obvious you could see through the gaps in the slats when it's in place.

That's kind of the whole point, to make space where there would just be wasted space under the sink
But wood, under a sink or basin, isn't it going to get constantly wet and eventually warp and rot. Especially if kids are splashing round. Voted neither hot nor cold but it's Impractical.

It's solid pine, it'll be fine. Most of the low-end ones are laminate... now that would be a story without a happy ending.

Better use of space is buy a unit with the basin built in on top, it may cost a little more but then you will have full shelves, like I said this is hideous and ugly, very bad design, but thats only my opinion, if you like it go for it
