Very droll.

What do you use this stuff in?

Cold! Not Oovavoo!
Haha, I voted hot really

licking hypno toads does the same thing.

Hot for the Vic & Bob reference. Made me chuckle

Anything you want a savoury taste in. Use instead of a stock cube, dash of Worcester sauce, or brown sauce etc. It's got a savoury taste:

If you want to be rude and insulting, you should do it in legible English for full effect.

There's a label there, but for the second week running no such product on the shelf. A shame as I'd loved to have tried it at that price. My local Asda is normally very good for stock, but last week I was told they had no stock of onions. Just basic normal onions.

you sound like the type that hasn't even ventured beyond his city of birth

Maggi sauce is similar. User like Worcestershire sauce...

Otherwise known as monosodium glutamate - a neurotransmitter in the brain which is involved either directly or indirectly in all brain functions- a natural product it must be good for you - though I should point out that it is the major cause of brain damage in stroke. Dont worry though it doesnt cross the blood brain barrier!

MSG is a synthesised ingredient used, as you say, to effect the uptake in the brain. umami pastes and sauces DON'T contain MSG though - that's the reason for them as MSG got a bad rap. umami enhances the tastebud's detection of savoury flavours when present with any of the other 4 flavours.

Umami's so fat.......

I'll get my coat...

I wish people would do a little research before completely slating a product based on their own wild assumptions... This is a completely natural product (fermented red bean paste essentially) containing no MSG (fully synthesised) whatsoever.

Bit random if you're not from Notts innit...?

Although I concur. It's still a nightmare tho. Nothing changes.

Yep. I'm happy to use a reference that less than 1% of people will get.

That's one reason I don't write sitcoms.

not sure what the link to the wikipedia article's for. mattgra's right, this doesn't contain MSG and your assertion that umami paste is otherwise known as MSG is incorrect, ironically confirmed by that article.

First of all, quoting a wikipedia entry as evidence to validate your point immediately means you lose the discussion...

Secondly, the link provided clearly explains that Umami is not MSG and vice-versa...

let's not worry about the nitty gritty, MSG makes food taste nice and fills you up.. think of the economy, there would be no chinese takeaways if MSG wasn't used as the food would taste pants. Not that this Umami stuff contains MSG anyway, but who cares if it did!

Back of the net!

Oovavoo - love it!

Flavor enhancer
Main article: Glutamic acid (flavor)
Glutamic acid, being a constituent of protein, is present in every food that contains protein, but it can only be tasted when it is present in an unbound form. Significant amounts of free glutamic acid are present in a wide variety of foods, including cheese and soy sauce, and is responsible for umami, one of the five basic tastes of the human sense of taste. Glutamic acid is often used as a food additive and flavor enhancer in the form of its salt, known as monosodium glutamate (MSG).

So this doesn't contain msg, it contains the same acid that is present in msg.
