Just started ParkRun regularly so wondered if any experienced runners can comment if expensive running shoe are worth it _ I'm not so much bothered about performance enhancing qualities (so said) as much as protection against injury (I'm not anything like an athlete but we've all got to start somewhere right!).

Thanks.

for good running shoes i would go on millet sports.some crazy didcounts on there at the moment

It's a good idea to go to a sprcialist running shop for a gait analysis. I point my toes in and roll my ankles. the gait analysis showed this very clearly. Nikes are very neutral so don't correct it. The best for me were Brookes.

I had my gait analysis done at Runner's Need. Service was very good. Disadvantage is that you feel guilty if you take their advice and then go and buy the shoes elsewhere for less!

If you've only just started running, I wouldn't worry about buying expensive trainers just yet but I would recommend something with some decent cushion/support depending how fast/long you run, personally I really wanted these as I've been suffering from shin splints from running too much (3-4 p/w). You can't go wrong with most other Asics, I've just had GT2000 which were good when I first got them, but obviously I've run them out! Good luck with ParkRun, it's great motivation!

I had my gait analysis done at a specialist sports shop. I'm now seeing a sports physiotherapist every 2 weeks to undo the damage their advice caused.
little knowledge very dangerous

Gait analysis... Dodgy business. Not much evidence behind it.

If you've walked/ran one way for many years, changing it isn't always a good idea.

but asics gel are brilliant
my current ones have done well over 1,000 miles and have 30%ish life left

How do you know how much life is left in the shock absorbing foam that make up the shoe?

Carry on running in what you have for now. If you develop pain in your knees, it could be due to under/over pronation. You may get pain in your feet due to arch support. Then you may be better off going to get your gait analysed and buying appropriate shoes. If you get into running, and do more than 5km, and your weekly mileage goes up, some better shoes with better cushioning would be advised

Just need to buy the first pair from there, after that you know what type you need and Amazon etc are your go to...

Knees used to swell up after runs and a friend mentioned gait analysis. Now wear Asics Phoenix Gel Duomax running shoes which I get on sale online with M&M Direct and averaging 5 miles a day without any knee/ankle issues. Whilst gait analysis will not be needed for everyone it saved me a lot of pain and trouble and I'd never go back to cheap/unsuitable running shoes.

Why pay £100! Just buy last seasons. sportsshoes.com really good website.

the gel doesn't break down and support is constant
I'm estimating life from the look of the soles

More fool you then, I suppose you could use the money saved from not replacing the shoes at the physio's.

The gel doesn't cover the whole support area and the foam does get compressed and worn out.

Brooke's beasts are unbeatable if you're flat footed

they convinced me I needed bespoke moulded sole inserts
then screwed up moulding them
feet and biomechanics not something that you should let amateurs meddle with

Thanks for advice it's appreciated. I am getting some knee pain after 5k ParkRuns so will see about 'gait analysis' maybe what I'm wearing is not right.
