Asus 15” laptop with Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB memory & 750GB storage

Took a quick look and the tech specs indicate it's a 2nd gen i3-2310 CPU that it comes bundled with.

Hp at currys is a better buy with 6gb RAM at £349.

But that one only comes in red.

they have the same processors intel i3. the asus has a larger hard drive. the colour of the laptops are the least of my concern and i read the most reliable laptops statistically in the long run after 3years is asus and the worst is HP by 10%- so in the long run id opt for asus for its durability and as an investment. im really torn between the two at the moment! ive read so many horror stories in regards to the whole currys, pc world, dixons delivery services since the laptop is not available for pickup but the asus one at comet's is near mines.

I'd rather have an Asus than HP too so have some heat!

we have just purchased a better asus at comet for £399 with inter i5 and 6gb. agree with HP vs ASUS. we had HP broke just after 12 months and then a year later completely conked out, hence gone for reviews of ASUS

I wouldn't buy a new laptop with less than 6gb RAM , cold for me.

Many, just that none of them will actually make sense.

HP probably comes loaded with loads of "free" software and trials which grind the machine to a halt. The Asus will be clean, so unless you're willing to do a format and re-install I'd say go with the Asus.

Which model was that Mark? Can't find one on the Comet website for 399...

Cheers

I just got an HP refurbished for 236 quid, I3 4gb 330gb hd.

I was skeptical but went with it. Very pleased. Fast only had to uninstall Norton and magic desktop so much better than my previous dell.

Battery .life is about 3hrs but i didn't have another 120 to fork out for a 2nd revision sandy chip.

Picked up one of these from comet yesterday and can't fault it so far. Runs faster than my previous HP laptop and is a lot quieter. Only fault is it has only got 2 USB ports but one of them is USB 3.0 so transfers faster. Also got £12 cashback on it via TCB.

I bought this a few days back, its very good value for money.

am in need of a new laptop after my HP has died on my after 15 months, definitely wont be going with HP ever again. Heat for you OP this looks like a good bundle to me

wish i can grow money on my tree to buy this laptop

The point of the website whether a deal is hot or cold, for me it's cold, for you it's hot.

Value for money. Like with any technological product, what was good for a year or two ago, isn't good enough now. If you spend such an amount of money, why not to get more RAM? the point is not just to buy a laptop because it's looks to you a good price. Check the spec and compare if you can't get for this amount of money a better machine.

Both expired now

Can anyone tell me what the battery life is like on this please? I currently have a Dell netbook that hardly runs Skype and the battery is about 2.5 hours. Looking for the cheapest possible replacement to fit those needs, so thoughts appreciated!

Battery life on all new laptops isn’t great - this is no exception.

But 6GB is bad value for money if you don't use it. Tasks entry level laptops are commonly used for, such as word processing, internet surfing and using media files don't need anywhere near 6GB.

The amount of RAM in this laptop is sufficient for most people and will probably not need to be upgraded for the life of the laptop.

The Asus is back for sale but £50 more expensive!!!!

the only bad thing about this laptop is it only has 10/100 ethernet and not 10/100/1000.

You sure about that? My netbook came loaded with a load of bloatware...

I brought an ASUS dropped it on a hard floor as it fell out of my ruck sack 7 days after buying as I got disturbed when zipping it up, it bounced and I thought the worst however, 2 years on its like brand new. Battery still strong, doesnt struggle with anything i throw at it. But the best part is its cool operating temp. No Heat comes from this laptop at all. Where as my missis HP which cost the same, is so hot it burns, and is technically a fire hazard. Wouldnt dream of ever owning a HOT laptop again... coolness is the way to go.

Has a 25% cooler than body temperature sticker still on the computer, and it doesn't lie... perfect!

Either that or the need to buy one of those pads, or lap contraptions!
Speed, battery and temperature, make this the best £450 ive ever spent.

ASUS normally does 2 years warranty too, but not on all models!

Also, because its so cool, it has no fan hum, so no noise, compared to the Compaq HP my missis has!

whats the diff from i3 and i5?

paulz

whats the diff from i3 and i5?

i3 runs at a constant speed, i5 is clocked higher and will automatically overclock to higher speeds when not in idle or not too hot.

i3 is 2.1ghz, i think i5 starts at 2.4ghz and overclocks to around 2.7ghz or so, so they can be a fair bit quicker but they obviously cost more.

Not necessarily so, my HP Probook 4530s easily passes 6 hours
and cost... £80 though that deal has expired.

Do I

Not sure if i should go for this or hold out for a better laptop 350 is pretty much the budget... Was waiting for a i5 for this price but starting to need a lappy now

Another bad thing (which i has to double check) is it has a maximum support of 4GB RAM, what it ships with, only 1x SO-DIMM socket.

There.

There.

Missed this one previously, looks hot(damn ugly tho IMO). Last day for cashback.

Voted cold simply because there have been deals going for 400 and under which have had i5 Sandy Bridge CPU's... paying 350 quid for an i3 with shared graphics really is nothing special at all, in fact its in line with prices for oher laptops of this spec.

The RAM is the easiest thing to upgrade in the whole system... and 6GB is enough for all but serious editing, which you wouldnt do on a mediocre 350 quid laptop anyway. The CPU and graphics card are what matters, so always think of them when calculating value for money.

1) is an i7 really that much better than i5?

2) is the difference greater than i5 over i3?
