Not much around after the great Dabs Fujitsu laptop.

This Asus with i5 processor reduced to £399. Use promotion code 5PC to get it at £379 and don't forget Quidco currently at 4.5%

I5-2430m

Heated added, that's amazing for the price

Good processor, with voucher and cashback rather tempting.

Was just about to order this for my Dad but is the code expired?

Damn - the 5PC code expired yesterday. Sorry!
The following is a good alternative (slower but OK CPU, more memory, more disk, cheaper!)
BUT NB. OUT OF STOCK BUT 200 MORE DUE IN A COUPLE OF DAYS.

In perspective though, it's not even as powerful as a modest desktop CPU such as the i3-2100. However both are powerful CPUs and both more than powerful enough for the average consumer. Intel, AMD, Nvidia, they're all guilty of naming their products in such as way to maximise consumer confusion and imply their products have a performance level that they don't really have. Really i5-2430m means relatively little to a consumer.

Still available and for collection locally, very tempted..

I bought one of these about a month ago for £359, it was ex display & I managed to haggle the manager down a bit too

I'm pretty happy with it although the touchpad buttons are a bit crap and at times it seems slower than the i3 lappy I used to have. Certainly doesn't seem any faster at all even with a fresh Windows 7 installation.

It was absolutely loaded with crap but I suppose most laptops are these days....

How does this compare to the Amazon Lenovo G570 Intel i5 2430M 2.4GHz, RAM 6GB, HDD 750GB at £429.00 ?

I bought one of these last Sunday at Comet (final day of the 7-day Frenzy).

A sleek, lean-looking machine.

Very early days...

Can confirm that it doesn't seem as fast as I thought it might be (but bear in mind I have been mainly downloading and installng Windows updates).

The speed indicator shows it operates at 2.4Ghz ... and then you have the fun of seeing it turbo-charge itself up to almost 3.00Ghz..

Some of the keys are a little smaller than I expected (the arrow keys).

Trackpad buttons are a tad clunky (they make an audible click).

Overall happy. It certainly seems well-built and is good-looking. I noticed that Comet are selling an i7 version of the same machine. They weren't on Sunday!!

Cheers bt Soluto is always one of the first things that goes onto a new install.
It boots up quickly, it just seems to pause quite a lot when typing.

But I'd still recommend it overall.

When typing in which application? Does the Task Manager indicate anything running excessively? e.g. may just be AV updating and/or scanning.

Ask on this very useful forum -> forums.moneysavingexpert.com/for…=29

You'd be better off running Advanced System Care and PCdecrapifier and learning about what you can remove from MSConfig, rather than using Soluto.

It's a spanky new installation of Windows 7 with really very little running on there.
I think maybe it's a little lacking in ram.

I will have a look at that Advanced System Care though, thanks for the shout

Sadly neither of those will indicate where the problem might be as they are both general tuning/houskeeping utilities rather than allowing you you 'see' what the slow boot times are caused by. Once you know where the software problems are you can dig deaper. If you want to dig deeper then the tools I would use would be autoruns and process explorer but both of these are not really for the faint of heart. In addition you would also need to check the disk. For that I would use Speedfan and HDDtune as my personal favorites.

Would this run Skyrim?

With "shared graphics" I'd say definately not.

Pity only 3 gig of ram, and no chance of running Skyrim with 3 gig and no dedicated graphics card, certainly not with any decent quality settings.
