They are cheap and relatively powerful.
They are built as an ancillary to your main computer but will in fact be more than adequate for 90% of users.

Using the flipbook version right now, fantastic little thing. C201pa is a bargain at this price.

Perfect for browsing and movies etc. Which is what 95% of people use laptops for anyway.

Wasn't working for me, but fixed it

I have yet to use a chromebook style device that can handle watching movies without the constant stutter and lag.

Even opening up office online lags these things.

These are great for 1 purpose and 1 purpose only.

Browsing and researching information on the internet.

If you are the type of person who needs to do alot of reaearch or enjoys searching online and general shopping these are great and the fact you cant watch movies and get distracted is a positive with these.

Please someone upload a video of youtube playing a basic 720p video on one of these without stutter or lag and I will eat humble pie.

It all depends on whether you think its worth the money.

I do own a chromebook and use it for research and for this sole purpose they are great as that what they are designed for.

Research, another word is porn...

Are you sure it's not just your Internet? Pretty sure this would handle a 720p video... This guy was expecting it to lag but it handles YouTube and other tasks just fine:

I have this model. It is completely fine for 720p videos (i stream movies a lot) and documents (i'm constantly writing up essays and lab work). However, i have the 4gb model so this model may lag if there are too many tabs open at once. There is slight lag when opening large documents but it's nothing major

I watch YouTube, Netflix etc all of the time on mine and never have any problems, and that's on a 2gb ram model.

Here is my experience with my old Samsung CB.
Note that I'm on Virgin Media "VIVID 200" broadband ... super fast!

Youtube & Netflix ... without lag or stutter. I watch Netflix on it everyday.
1080p live football streaming [via HDMI to my 4K Tv] ... without lag or stutter.

I just watched a 99p rental from the Play store without any lag or stutter. That was at SD.

always been this price, if it was the 2gb ram model it would be hot but not for the 1gb version.

woah, hold your horses there boy, not a chance that these struggle with video playback, I use ours daily for YouTube and even stream mkvs from my nas, most of which are 1080p, this is a very decent bit of kit

I regularly watch Netflix on my two year old HP Chromebook with no lag.

You mention your lab work, is it animal testing judging by the username?

2gb RAM with a Rockchip cpu would not be a good idea. however, the android store and touch screen will make up for this.

Another big advantage with Chromebooks, not yet mentioned here, is that they start up in about 10 seconds. Also they never update whilst you are trying to do something important, the updates are done in the background at the start up. I've had mine for 2 years now and no regrets at all.

Yep, they dont update while you are doing something important, but in fairness nobody has ever tried to achieve something important with a chromebook.
I like them, and talk of spec is all pretty irrelevant as they'll all play 1080p streaming and let you do web stuff and google apps etc.

Main benefits: cheap, instant on, keeps the kids off my thinkpad.

Main benefit for me of chromeboxes and by extension chromebooks is the reduced chance of breaking them. I got my mum a chromebox a few years ago and the number of times she's called up to say something's wrong with her PC is 0. She has however struggled with managing more than 1 window so Google hangouts can get her in a pickle. Not the computer's fault at least.

Ease of maintenance. Keep them selves patched. Can be reset easily if an issue occurs.

Also no Windows OS! This is a Linux based operating system and is less open to hacking/viruses etc.

Yep, it is either all faulty or there is an issue with your connection. Guess where my money is.

Could someone tell me if you can use a program equivalent to Word offline on these Chromebook? Or do you have to always be connected to the Internet?

You use Google drive and can elect to be able to work on individual files off line. You can certainly do this with your tablet or smartphone. I've never tried with a Chromebook as I always use it at home.

Chromebooks play 1080p content really well. Either your internet is slow or you've just made this problem up for some weird reason

Ordered 5.30pm on the 23rd, arrived 11am on the 24th. Well impressed with the delivery!!

hi...daughter has saved enough to get one of these. .would she be able to play minecraft and msp on it without problems? ? oh and watch u tube of course :-)

i constantly use mine with Plex at 1080p and it never lags, sounds like an internet issue rather than a Chromebook issue

Yes same here,unreal service.

Couldn't you get a fully working 11" laptop for this price though?

Get a Chrome book with 4GB of RAM or more for the best experience and make it future proof. 2GB no longer cuts it and when Android apps start integration then at least 4GB is going to be needed. My chrome book idles at over 2GB RAM usage with just the browser open one tab (plus all apps and extensions it opens with). If you're a very light user a good tablet w/keyboard in this price range is probably a better idea than a Chrome book.

can i skype with a chromebook

i use my ancient c720 and it plays you tube 720p video smooth with no lag, with no problems. I think your getting confused with your internet connection. I'm not even on fibre broadband and it runs fine. I'm sure many Chromebook users here will agree for streaming videos, Chromebooks handle videos with ease.
