Hi Guys, please be gentle, this is my first time!

Dixons are currently doing a deal on that new little laptop/netbook, the Asus EEE 900 Linux variant, which comes with a 20GB hd

You have to use discount code ASUS at checkout, and then discount code AW5. Also use quidco for an additional 3% cashback to sweeten the deal I just placed an order myself as they are in stock, grab it while its HOT!

Good luck!

better than the play price even with 9% off!

Just be aware that the Atom revision of the 900 is right around the corner (June). The new Atom consumes a lot less energy and is supposed to be sold at the samre price as the current 900 version.

One thing to note is that chances are they'll come with 4400mAh batteries. Other countries are getting 5800mAh ones. There's pressure on Asus UK to provide us with 5800mAh batteries but nothing has been confirmed by them.

The new EEE 900 is a fantastic little notebook which I had preordered because of its size and because it was powerful enough for me to do development on the train to work.

However, I cancelled my preorder because of a number of reasons.

1) The new atom based version is meant to be on the horizon.
2) The UK battery is **** poor.
3) Play had no stock on the day of release.

Hi All,

Thanks for your comments! I too like many above thought about the shortcomings for a while, but decided to bite the bullet eventually or I would probably be forever waiting for the next thing to pop up. Things to note:

The Atom based version, even though it has a higher clock rate, it is said that it may end up performing more slower than the current variant (celeron-m) processor, because of the architecture. Basically, the 1.6 Atom, will perform closer to an 800Mhz Pentium M processor.

Battery times should be considerably improved, which also will depend more on how the chipset and other components are managed/changed, rather than just the processor itself. It has already been assumed that the increase in how long it will perform on the atom will be about 30-45 mins more.

Although I am happy with my purchase, I am personally hoping the battery exchange will happen, because any extra time on the laptop is a good thing obviously

Not really. Check the comparison ]here:

The celeron currently shipped with the 900 is clocked at 900mhz. Using the results from the 1.6ghz celeron as a benchmark, you get:
Alu: 3420 (6080/1600*900)
FPU: 4111 (7309/1600*900).

Which are lower than the Atom CPU. You also have to balance the 4watts vs 35 watts (if I'm not mistaken) power consumption between the Celeron and the Atom.

I've ordered a HP 2133 and it should be here today! Once the new VIA comes out I'll drop that in it!

200 quid by christmas - you are paying novelty money on this still.
