what does that mean then?

Original Poster

I took the details from page 31 of the Sun.

Whats the battery life like on this. As I remember one asus laptop recalled/sent out with a different battery.

My guessing that its 16gb hard disk space and 1gb ram memory

The 16gb is a solid state disk. The 900 model (this one) is the one with the lower capacity battery than the 901

16 is odd... I thought these came with 20gb with linux, or 12gb with windows?

Sounds a good price but need more info.

The 16GB is the 900 to avoid.. I don't want to vote cold but ...........

The 900s come with a 4400mAH battery and the replacement scheme ended a long time ago so unless you fork out for a new one you're basically stuck with it.

12GB => Windows
20GB => Linux
16GB => cost saving measure by removing one SSD

I assume its this one (tbh, I dont read the sun, so will have to guess...)

amazon.co.uk/WF0…-11

In which case, its Linux based and a whole £1 cheaper. But if you want it there and then, I guess...

Yes, you're probably right

16GB HDD is not much use though, didn't realise they still made them that small.

Tuggy, there's a big difference between a 16GB SSD and a normal (mechanical) HDD.

You should read up on things before posting.

It's a 16gb SSD (Solid State Disk - basically a glorified USB stick) - its a lot faster than standard disks, and is ideal on these netbooks because it has no moving parts.

Main problem is that they have a Celeron processor rather than the Atom of the 901 series

Funny you should mention that, there's a new 900 that's already shipping in Europe that has the Atom CPU.

It's on sale in Germany for about £220-230 though I suspect it will still fall short with the SSD, and if not I'm sure Asus will screw us over with a low capacity battery just for fun.

Why? It's the same speed as the atom and although it's not quite as efficient this does still have the relatively large 4400 mAh battery so you get around 2 hours use.

LOL
To me it doesn't matter whether it's HDD or SSD or anything else, it's still a miserly amount of storage.

It's fine for what it's made for. If you want to add more storage then it's cheaply done via SD card. If you want a large HDD in your netbook then go for an Advent or the HDD-equipped Acer Aspire.

The 4GB SSD removed is the fast SSD the 16GB SSD is slower.
Also the 900 model is the one that drains the battery when switched off.

Yep sorry for confusing every when I mentioned hard disk I was in a hurry leaving the house when I wrote the comment, like everyone has corrected me it is solid state disk.

It does appear that Asus really do short change the uk customer cos I remember reading about the battery recall/replacement where other countries where given the battery free either by exchange or extra but in the uk there was a limited time to contact seller/asus and I think you had to actually had to part exchange plus extra money to get the proper battery.

You sent back your existing 4400mAH battery and received a 5800mAH in return for a tenner, Asus handled the situation very badly but the company that Asus outsourced to handle the swap were fairly decent.

ebuyer.com/pro…294

Does that have the good battery in it, seems hot to me

Imho h04x that is a much better buy because of the far faster 4GB primary SSD, it'll still come with the bog standard low capacity battery though.

However at this price point you should also be considering what Acer has to offer, not to mention the known problems with this Asus model.

im tempted to purchase the one from ebuyer just worried about battery life, where can i purchase the upgraded battery

If battery life is your greatest concern I wouldn't buy the 900, not just because you'd likely end up buying another battery (£30+) but also due to the fact that the battery discharges at a disproportionate rate whilst off leaving it dead within a few days.

Ebuyer did have black replacement batteries in stock at £29.99 but they've since sold out.

can you not exchange your battery with asus for £10 with your old battery? Im just looking for something small that i can take to uni to browse the net and do some word processing

No they ended that scheme ages ago.
