Why cold guys?

I think this is a good deal compared to the other retailers asking for £300+.

Also worth noting that you get a 6 cell battery that lasts 4.5 hours with bluetooth and wifi on and screen at full brightness.

You also get a carry case for it.

Compare that to the Advent which cost me £270 and lasts around 2 hours and had no carry case so I'll have to spend £20 odd for a case and £??.?? for a 6 cell battery.

Not voting hot or cold - but this has a smaller hard drive and no XP - also the advent is about £250 with the voucher and quidco

I think this is miles ahead of the Advent due to battery life. This can manage 7 hours, the Advent, around 3!

It has less storage precisely because it doesn't have Windows on it, it doesn't need it. Windows takes up a hell of a lot more space than the Linux variant on these.

Oh and the Linux versions of EEE's are quicker than their XP counterparts too

I don't get it - this is definitely the best deal on the 901 at the moment - why is it so cold? As to the storage, I'm quite happy to get rid of any HDD noise and 20GB is more than enough for browsing imho.

Burning HOT!

Not picking nits - but you are a bit off the mark with those comments

The advent has an 80 gig of storage - Windows XP does not need that much!

I think it has less storage cos it is using one of those newer types of hard drives with no moving parts basically a large flash drive

Hmmm.

The storage issue isn't really a problem as you get 20gb of cloud storage (net back up if correct terminology???) and 20gb physical SSD hdd. This is more than enough for my usage as this is a secondary laptop used mainly for using the web.

The battery life on the advent, just doesn't cut it. Shame as it's such a good little lappy.

Edit: Forgot to say, I could add extra storage and still install XP on it.

Sorry my bad, for some reason I thought he was comparing the XP and Linux EEE versions (XP version comes with more storage).

So yeah EEE is solid state and the Advent is a standard HDD. Solid state is much quicker and much less susceptible to damage from being dropped etc. So the EEE has the advantage there, but there is a trade off in Gb per £.

You can't claim that the Linux version is faster than the XP version, the hardware is identical except for the smaller storage, crazy.

I can because it's true: youtube.com/wat…1B4. Software can make a hell of a difference, and the XP version only gets slower once you put on things like Office etc. to get it up to the same functionality the Linux one has by default.

That's software.. I'm talking about hardware which is what I thought you were talking about.

Anyway it proves one thing I've always believed, Vista is ****.

Good deal but the battery length comparisions aren't fair.

The advent shipped with a 3 cell and this has a 6 cell so it's going to have a longer battery life.

That was exactly my point  i.e. the Linux version is better because it doesn't have XP clogging it up and it comes with more functionality out of the box, you have to install a tonne of stuff on the XP version to make it as useful, which in the case of office can cost you more than the laptop did in the first place if you need the higher end versions.

Voted hot, despite the argument above !

I don't need or want Office... I prefer XP however to the stock Asus distro, but that's just my opinion - each to their own.

As for the battery comparison... whose fault is that? Deja vu if you ask me, Asus shipped a smaller battery with the 900 and now MSI have done the same thing.

Still a hot deal though, despite your OS preferences......right.......

I never hinted that it was cold.

Would help if it was in stock though :giggle:.

That's the point. A 6 cell battery won't be cheap.

If the Advent shipped with the 6 cell then it would have got my vote but for me, it makes financial sence to return the advent and pay a little more for the Asus which includes a stella battery and a protective case/wallet.

Also worth noting that my Advent 4211 has crashed 5 times in 2 days (around 8 hours usage).

That's rather what's being pointed out. The Advent netbook comes with a smaller battery so battery life is much shorter.

The 901's RRP is now £299 so this is only a £10 saving and out of stock so not a great deal, but it looks like one of the best prices around at the moment if you can wait for stock.

These have now been delayed.

I can't be bothered with the wait so cancelled my order.

The order screen was saying DUE 14/7/08 but the guy on the phone at CS said that they were from America and may still turn up in a week or so.

What a joke.

best price so far, but come on asus get them orders sent out!

if i go for the 901, will go for the linux one for the 20gb storage, and probably put my own xp pro on it, may have it dual boot xp / linux?

oh and stick 2gb ram in it

Did anyone get their 901 then???
