This is probably the best 10.2" netbook, although there are concerns about the power supply. Currently vying with the NC10, while Samsung plays silly beggar with "new" versions with lower specs and higher prices, but this has better battery life and a slightly better processor than the NC10.

Win7, the Atom/Ion combination, higher resolution screens and CULV are just around the corner ....... so this is probably the last blast under the current Wintel cartel rules (Atom / XP / limited architecture).

Only fly in the ointment for the "new" bunch is how restricted the Win7 netbook version will be.........

Worth mentioning the specs, this is the N280 chipped one, not the cheaper, N270 that was listed a few days ago. I have this unit and think it is excellent (I have upgraded to Win 7) however the plastic is very, very easily marked.

Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz,
1 GB RAM,
160 GB HDD,
Windows XP,
up to 10 Hours Battery Life

Also, it comes with a good case. I ordered a neoprene Belikin one to go with it and don't need it.

Good deal. Only dropped by £3 though

We have an Ion lite version out already with slightly larger higher res screen at about £100 more than this one. I wonder whether these advancements will cost more, or whether prices really will come down. One thing is certain is netbooks are very popular. They would certainly be mad to sell them for less than they can sell them for.

I think this was on sale previously for £294 so the its £15 drop, not bad for a the best netbook out there..the keyboard is the best and the screen too

Thanks for such a helpful post! Rep added! I am very tempted with the deals on current notebooks but I did wonder if I should wait for Windows 7. I didn't know they'd be restrictions though, can you explain or link me to somewhere that does?

Oh and heat and rep for original post too - very tempted!

There was some talk of stopping people changing the desktop wallpaper. That's the only restriction I remember hearing of. If they do do that though I suspect there'll be a hack on the net in no time to sort it out.

the keyboard is the best

Really? I haven't used ANY netbooks yet, but I thought most reviews said the Samsung NC10 had a better keyboard than either these or the MSI Wind?

Like anything it's probably down to personal preference. If you have a staples or PC world near you can go down and try them out for yourself. I think the keyboard on this is quite good.

I'd hold fire for a couple of weeks because this netbook with Windows 7 starter and a 250GB drive + 500GB EEE PC Online HDD is due out later this month for just £20 more.

Any references? Not saying I doubt you just I've not seen such info and have been looking hard for it to no avail.

This is closest I have found

It’s likely that these computer will be cheaper when they hit the states.

Remember we brits are ripped off mercilessly though and I suspect while 299 euros equates to £275, we'll be paying closer to £350.

Edit: Ahhh this is more like it....

I suspect second one is the n280 model, so it's £30 more

If MS bother to produce a version of Win7 for netbook called the "Starter edition", it suggests there will be restrictions. I too heard about not being able to change the wallpaper - that just seems petty - I'm more concerned that some actual functionality will be limited or missing.

There's a comparison here en.wikipedia.org/wik…ons I think the changing wallpaper is to try get people to pay to upgrade to home premium or better.

They even wanted to limit number of apps running at once to 3 blogs.zdnet.com/Bot…844 but luckily M$ saw sense on that one.

Thanks - I had not seen that

This suggests that Wintel are still trying to control Netbook architecture ........ so it will now still depend on the manufacturers finding workarounds.

I don't want to get involved in the "what is a laptop / netbook / notebook" argument - I don't care what it's called I just want a reasonable, portable system at the lowest price achievable - where i decide what features I want, not some multinational control-freak, Netbooks have already served to drop the price of notebooks, which once commanded stupidly high prices against their feature-set due to "portability". Long may it continue :whistling:

EDIT - Looking at the specs for the new machines, ASUS are only offering a 0.3mp webcam rather than the one available on the "premium" N280 model now. Spec error or some strange downsizing?:?

Yeah I guess they were lazy and just copied from the first model without checking.

If releasing the windows 7 models brings the XP ones to about £50+ less I'll be buying the XP version and will put up with 160gb versus 250gb.

Price is now £268.94 for the white model amazon.co.uk/Asu…8-2 It will no doubt drop more closer to the Windows 7 release.
