The Asus fonepad is ideal for people who value both the voice communication features of a smartphone and the entertainment opportunities afforded by a tablet, but prefer the convenience of carrying just one device. fonepad is a sleek and compact tablet with a metallic design that can be held comfortably in one hand, thanks to a slim and light profile. Powered by the latest Intel Atom processor, and with full Android compatibility, fonepad features a perfect balance of performance and energy efficiency, with hardware-accelerated 1080p Full HD video decoding and up to 9 hours of battery life. The screen features 10-point multi-touch, and a crisp 1280 x 800 HD resolution for crisp, readable web page text and incredibly detailed photos. IPS technology ensures vibrant colour, and wide viewing angles ensure that you can read the screen in bright light, even outdoors.

Built-in 3G with HSPA+ mobile data means that the fonepad is an always-connected mobile device for seamless web browsing, fast downloads from Google Play Store, and smooth audio and video streaming. Thanks to full 3G telephony support, fonepad can also be used for voice calls using the built-in noise-cancelling digital microphone or Bluetooth headset (sold seperately). With just one mobile data plan to pay for, running costs are also much lower than those of a separate smartphone and 3G tablet.

So it's main competitor is the Nexus 7 3G. The main advantages are microSD slot and being able to call, price (Atom based, may help may hinder). Advantages for the Nexus are better GPU, most up to date android, ARM based SoC.

You would need to have a head like Rocky Dennis to use this!,
Hot though for a 7" Tablet with 3G

Does have GPS. HERE

atom cpu is excellent compared to the Tegra, which rarely gets to use its full 4 cores, nice price just a little too small for my liking, 8-9inches would be better ( or so our lass tells me, i have no clue as im usually asleep at that point... ) heat though

Looks like it has no HDMI useless you can use via micro USB it it has one

Thanks. Have read several reviews of this now. Looks pretty neat for the money. I did however read that games aren't necessarily compatible with Intel CPUs. Might check this out a bit more.

I think most things are compatible now. Much work has been done. Have a look on the compatibility of apps/games in the Orange SanDiego thread over at Modaco and XDA.

Wonder if this could ever get Windows 8 on it? Would be excellent!

Congratulations Phil, you've just won the Viz award for the 500th HUKD'er to use innuendo comparing tablet screen size to male sexual performance. Congratulations, your trophy, which is a wopper with a large girth (snarf, snarf), is in the post. (_;)

With the atom being x86 then why not?

Hello? Yes, you'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a lab coat.

Is this the model with the rear 3MP shooter...thought that the UK only getting the 16Gb no rear camera version though amazon shows the model with the camera but doesn't mention it in the specs...confused

I'll wait and see what they do to the OS.
Nothing more annoying then a load of manufacturers software when you buy a computer.

I think it would be possible but it would probably be as sluggish as hell if you compare the z2420 vs the z2760 which is the chip in all the current range of touchscreen netbooks (like the acer w510)

cpu-world.com/Com…tml

Would be a nice proof of concept tho (would really like an 7-9" x86 windows 8 tablet)

Although the model seen at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) had a rear camera, the UK model does not.

Haha, I was gonna post this but you beat me to it. This is (in my opinion) the best value branded (ASUS) smartphone/tablet of 2013.

The CPU (Intel Atom Z2420) is not bad - click here for benchmarks of a phone using the same CPU and GPU combination
It beats Xperia U, Galaxy Note, and others in benchmarks due to the x86 architecture (vs ARM) with hyper threading technology plus it's reported to be more power efficient as well. The graphics is similar to what Galaxy Nexus have, here's a video of what it's capable of. These specs paired with Jellybean smoothness will be more than enough for regular users.

The downside would be some apps not compatible but according to users of RAZRi which also uses Intel CPU these are very few and the x86 architecture is now being included in the development of apps. BBC iPlayer and Sky Go will work but you might have to use modified apps that are available from XDA. It has everything a regular user would want (sd slot, 3g, GPS, bluetooth, voice call, brand support) for £179. Since it's very cheap, I predict lots of developers supporting this as well. I hope they sell the 8Gb version here in the UK but it's only intended for the Asia pacific region. (WHY?!)

Now I have to sell my Galaxy Note to have an excuse of getting this. LOL

That's just my point in which case Amazon need to alter their listing pics I reckon? Apparently there is an 8GB rear camera version and the UK bound 16GB no camera version...Amazon are citing 16GB and showing pics of a rear camera...think they need to get their act together (_;)

I have a Motorola RAZR I and it uses a Intel chip (single core) every game I have used have been compatible, I think this was a issue when the RAZR I first came out.

You might hope that amazon knows since they're encouraging people to pre-order it...afaik there is NO 16GB rear camera model but that's just what they're trying to flog!

I'd love to know cos like the look of this to replace my aging sanfran and want a tab so possible double whammy but would need a rear camera...

Yes, this is not a gadget for everybody but what is?

* If you're like me who gets a maximum of 1 call a week then this is no problem
* If you can use earphones with built in mic then this is no problem
* If you can use a bluetooth headset this is no problem
* If you're mature enough to realise that some people value function over form then this is no problem

If you like picking and laughing at people because they use gadgets that look weird even if it's practical and does not bother them at all then YOU have a problem not them.

Been thinking about swapping my Xperia S for this for a while... Reckon a pair of in-ear headphones with a mic would solve the looking-stupid-as-hell problem.

Still can't imagine it being very friendly for being out and about with though! Hoping for a slight improvement on retail price after it's released, great value though.

Champagne colour on the back though, vom, going to have to get the spray paint out

Are you gonna tell amazon or should I...

It was announced on launch that EU version will be 16GB without camera while the APAC (Asia Pacific) version will only be 8GB but with 3MP rear camera:

http://hexus.net/media/uploaded/2013/2/76d364b3-071c-449b-b11c-88157387dcdb.jpg

Here's the promo video for those interested: click here
Here's a video of the 8gb version with the camera: click here
It has aluminium unibody design and would do most things a £600+ plastic smartphone would do in less than a third of the price.

I wish we could petition the 8gb version with the camera here in the UK

This is hot although I would rather wait until feedback is out

Yeah, first world problems... LOL (_;) It's interesting to note that Nexus 7 fits my inside jacket pocket though and people would probably put these in bags.
