First of all, a £1000 birthday present? Think you're on the wrong website m8, I'd have a £40 tops birthday present. Second of all, this has a dated CPU and GPU. Look for something with an i7 7700hq and 1060 for a grand

It’s an old model we are on series 10 got now and soon to be series 11 at some point this year. Same with the processor it’s a 6 series and we are now in 8. I don’t think it’s worth the money already ageing.

Try looking at the ASUS FX753VD-GC256T on Saveonlaptops website. i7-7700HQ Processor, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD 1TB HD, GeForce GTX1050 4GB Graphics, 17.3" Screen, DVD Rewriter, £999.97

Look for the HP Omen 15 deal on here. No SSD but a better GPU £899 from the HP store

The 980m will run out of steam far quicker than the 1060. It will struggle playing AAA titles at high to max settings now.

A grand for a birthday I can bet any money you don't live on a council estate
Can everyone stop being so quick to judge and just help the guy out like he's asked. Jeeze.
You"ll want at least an Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb GPU (ignore the 940mx 1050 & 1050ti or anything with a 9 at the beginning)

Core i5 7300 - Core i7 6700/7700

8gb DDR4 ram minimum. 16gb is better but will push the price up

1tb HHD minimum - 128 or 256 gb SSD recommended. Higher the better. Again the higher you go the more it will cost.

1080p screen (look for IPS screen rather than TN) it'll be written in the discription.

Thunderbolt port is a good addition though not a dealbreaker

Yes, but is it within budget, I say probably not if like me you want a 17.3", i7-7700HQ and DVD drive. If you can find me a GTX1060 with these specs for under £1000 then please forward some suggestions, but the same spec machine with 4GB GTX1050Ti is £1099.99, so I imagine a GTX1060 to be more than that.

I think if you want a gaming laptop and have to compromise it's better to do so with screen size and processor.

A 1050 just doesn't cut it tbh. Its good for medium quality settings at best. A year or two and it won't be good for that either.

A 1060 is the bare mininmum imho, especially if you're going to keep it for more than a couple of years.

An i5/1060 combo with hold its own far longer than an i7/1050/1050ti

Personally, no. If you're going to buy a HP Omen, get one with the 120hz screen. The standard 60hz is terrible according to reviews.

amazon.co.uk/ASU…rch

This would be a better option imho. It's only a 15 incher and has an i5 rather that i7 but it has a GTX 1060 GPU so it'll be far better for gaming.

Or if you really want a 17" screen, this one.
