I'm looking for a good graphics card to replace a 2GB GeForce GTX 960 2GB in my son's computer - to drive a new 4K monitor. I don't want to go up to a 1070 8GB because of price. Would this card do the job - 3GB only?

i wouldn't bother with a 3gb card. The problem is the 1060's haven't hardly dropped in price since they were released. I bought an evga supercharged 6gb for £220 ages ago & according to a few places it is equal to a standard gtx1070. so if you could find a 6gb on offer anywhere in the January sales I'd go for that. also I think to run VR if you are ever interested you will need a 6gb Gtx1060.

Thank you, I've had a look and seen them around for about £250 so I'll be keeping a sharp lookout in January. It seems to fit the bill well as a 4K driver without the silly money for an 8GB 1070.

I would be extremely leery of any place that suggests the best 1060 gb is anywhere near the cheapest 1070...

Whoever suggested the EVGA 6gb was 'equal to a standard gtx 1070' was telling you porky pies.

When i purchased my EVGA superclocked card there was very little between that & a standard 1070 for a lot less money. you are comparing an ASUS card which is 100mhz slower. I did not say it was as fast but was saying for the money I had, it was the best buy..

The Strixx also has a base clock of: 1620 MHz GPU, 1847MHz Boost

The EVGA Superclocked has a based clock of: 1607 MHz GPU, 1835 MHz Boost

The Strixx is a *slightly* faster card, but it is essentially the same.

I am not saying your card was a bad purchase, what I am saying is that you are making a statement that I am claiming is not true.

There is quite a bit of difference between the 1060 6gb and 1070 cards.

I provided you a link showing it and you tried to chop it down as not representative, but the card I linked is a better card (I mean it has 3 fans, yours has 1, let's not fool ourselves, 3 fans is almost always better cooling than 1).

techpowerup.com/rev…tml

This ASUS Strixx card has better thermals, therefore should be able to OC higher.

The Strixx is 30% slower than a 1070. The EVGA is also 30% (or more?) slower than the basic 1070.

Was it the right purchase for you? Absolutely. But the 1060 6gb you purchased isn't 'near a standard 1070'.

30% performance in the GPU segment is a very large lead.

Which of the dual fans would you suggest between these …Which of the dual fans would you suggest between these two:https://www.novatech.co.uk/products/palit-geforce-gtx-1060-dual-3gb-gddr5-graphics-card/ne51060015f9-1061d.htmlhttps://www.novatech.co.uk/products/zotac-geforce-gtx-1060-3gb-amp-edition-gddr5/zt-p10610e-10m.html

Right, both of these are fine, good values, I have a very slight lean towards the Palit version, but I have never had any zotac or palit cards personally.

I've read a bit, and I feel it is slightly better, but you should read the reviews yourself too!

I'm not 100% sure - he plays a big mix as far as I know. His current GPU is a 770 so I think these should be a decent step up?

That's fair, only thing I'd be tempted on is getting the 1060 6gb, just depends on the games he plays.
