I have one of these and an i7 6700k still sitting in a box since new as work had caught up with me. Looks like in the next few weeks I might have a chance to finally put it together.

Wondering if it's worth it or just sell it now and buy newer parts. GPU wise I have a GTX 1080 and a 4k monitor (not starting a "you can't play in 4k" discussion, I realize I need to lower settings).

Well my 1984 911 turbo still gets the job done....perhaps this will too while being hot, loud and underpowered for 2018.

I have the same CPU/GPU combo and can play most things in 4K on near ultra (with a mild OC on both) and Oculus Rift with SS set to 1.5 and maintain 90fps. You’ll get nothing close to what you paid at this point so I’d give it a try before shelling out a fortune.

What are you playing, counter strike/overwatch/fortnite?

For reference, an i7 7700k, GTX 1080ti OC on a Maximus Hero IX will only get 75-100 fps on Assassin's Creed: Origins Ultra at 1440p, let alone 4k (which would be half of that roughly). So I assume you're playing the less demanding games.

Umiraz85 - if you build that PC you'll be looking at 25-40FPS on the most demanding games at 4k. BF1 will run at 40-60FPS though, which may be acceptable depending on what you're preference is (FPS or resolution and G sync would be useful due to the low framerate). It'll be fine if you wanted to play some e-sports titles that are well optimised though.

ultra ultra ultra - there's your problem. Play with reasonable settings and a 1080, and even lesser cards, can comfortably do 4k

your better of getting the ps4 pro or xbox as all the games are optimised to run better on them they play games at 60fps
Have this board, been rock solid since day of release.

Thanks for all the feedback all, so its either I build this system and play 4k with lower settings or I try sell these two items and buy a new CPU/MB combo.

Sounds like buying a new CPU/GPU that is the equivalent of these parts (but for 2019) would be quite expensive (i7 8700k + MB) and might not be worth it if i'm only playing games. I don't really do any streaming or anything else on the computer....but i really do want to leverage my 4k monitor and am wondering if an 8700k will give me a noticeable fps increase with the 1080?

A bit of a dilemma.

No, you won't. If anything, you'll need to upgrade your PSU.

Your GPU will be the bottleneck, if you feel the need to upgrade that will be where you’ll see the biggest benefit unless you’re heavily into sims (flight, racing etc).

I am into racing games, but its not where I spend the bulk of my time.

I think thats a good shout , perhaps I'll wait until the 1180's are released and upgrade to that if that makes the most sense?

1180s are rumoured to be out end of this month, so not long to wait. If it was me I’d see how I got on with what I have and what I want to do with it, and upgrade if/when necessary.
