I've been looking for one of these, but the reviews are quite bad for this, saying it doesn't last.

Lenovo have a model at the moment which is getting good reviews, Lenovo ThinkVision M14

Same as me! I did the same on amazon warehouse 6 months ago excellent I have the usb c cable which connects to the MacBook Pro - great screen and very slim
Could it use used for PS4 with a hdmi adapter?
I had one of these for quite a while and loved it. No issues with longevity.
Could this mirror a mobile phone ie OnePlus 6t?
Realistically what's the point of this if you're already carrying around a laptop which has a screen on it?

Fair enough. Just feels like a weird part of the market to me - when portability is all about reducing what you have to carry.

Couldn't you get a similarly sized tablet (for cheaper) and use some software to use it as a display?

Yes it will mirror any Huawei Mate , Samsung Galaxy or OnePlus 7 Pro with displayport alternate mode but battery drains in 5 minutes due to single usb c port in the monitor . This is worst monitor to buy (because of single usb c port ) therefore reduced . Buy any other portable monitor with separate power and signal ports or at least 2 usb c ports with one for power other for display. OnePlus 6T does not have Displayport Alternate mode so it won't work.
Been looking around for similar monitors, apparently there is a lot a choice out there. Look at this one for similar price 4K HDR

It's hard to find big (greater than 10") tablets. When you find them, they tend to be expensive (I am not spending a grand on an ipad). When you do get them, they include batteries which you don't generally need. When they do work as a second screen, the latency and so on is generally worse than plugging a HDMI cable into a dumb monitor.

As for users, I'm a consultant so have to be able to move between clients at a moments notice. This stops me having a desktop, but anything that can fit in a backpack is fair game. I carry a laptop and as of this week a portable monitor because dual screens are great for productivity.

Unless you have multiple USB C sockets. Agreed for single socket devices though.
So this is basically a standalone laptop screen?
