Whats the build quality like on Asus products ?

I have a N56VM and the build quality is good. The only niggle is trying to remove a network cable is very tricky but it's not very often I need to use it wired. Also, never spill anything on the keyboard as it's stupidly expensive to replace!

There are many models of the i7 chip so you need to add that to the title/description.

This laptop has the 3630QM. A pretty damn powerful CPU.
It's got 4 cores/8 threads and gets an impressive score of 7739 on passmark. Only a few hundred points short of the latest Haswell.

Have they fixed the dodgy spacebar on this type of keyboard ?

Full break down of the specification can be found here NoteBook Check

In my opinion this is a better spec'd laptop than the Dell New Inspiron that was posted yesterday and has got over 700 degrees of heat, albeit in a smaller package.

£75 more for a crappier graphics card, you must be mental to buy this

And all the resolution hounds are idiots, resolution is a small part of screen quality

What good is good screen res when you cant even play top games on it lol

And any normal user who needs this i7 is an idiot , cpu is way overpowered compared to gpu

Cold, screen res is.....good. The integrated graphics....are dedicated. Erm ah the processor is not the latest gen!

Fantastic price for all this kit. Should keep most people quiet lol.

I've got the N76 model from this range. It's a great laptop - build quality, looks and performance have all been excellent.

The one downside is the track pad, which is by far the worst I've ever used. It really is pathetically bad and makes it almost to do anything precise. Thankfully I use a mouse most of the time.

Your opinion is pretty bad then , good luck with your under-utilised cpu bottlenecked by your gpu

Or will you be running many virtual machines/ cad rendering software all at once?

I find it funny when the computer illiterate give out advice haha

i7 is for those ppl need muti-tasking, not an idiot LOL

I want a laptop that covers atleast 90% srgb..

I could multi-task in 2007 with a £400 laptop

This is overkill( ssd and ram are much more important for "multi-tasking " nonsense you speak of)

Inspirion deal is much better, you need much more gpu power to play games at higher res, and even though i have a retina ipad, going back to my laptop doesnt make me feel like killing myself, unlike the seeming feelings of those that post the not full hd crap

Ipad mini retina has a much higher PD then ipad air but the ipad air's screen quality is much better, which is proof that all these full hd nuthuggers are idiots.(pardon my language)

Nice cpu weak gpu. Do not get for gaming. Otherwise a decent price for nice spec.

The 740 is ddr, the 750 is Gddr which is as powerful as the gtx660m(much more powerful then the 740)

I have a similar model to this, but also have GT 740m 4 GB version, it does a very good job on games tho tbh.

That's fine, But as I will be primarily using this laptop for work which involves developing applications in visual studio and working on multiple office documents at the same time the screen resolution is very important and the CPU speed is more important than GPU. RAM and hard disk can be upgraded at a latter date as an when required.

Could you please point me at a high res laptop with similar specification within this price range?

You won't get much game performance difference between this and the Dell. The Dell's cpu will bottleneck the performance in most current games.

You do realise people use laptops for things other than gaming, right?

Agree, weak GPU plus a full HD screen is not a good mix for gaming performance. Otherwise not a bad spec.

The U processors, like in the Dell deal, are fine for everyday use, but struggle at games.

This deal is great too. The 740m is not that bad. For a true gaming laptop, you'll be spending over £1k for beefier specs. For the price, this is a good laptop. Perfect for playing games at a reasonable quality level.

well, open a word and a browser, that's not muti-tasking, i guess. what i refer to, is sth like, using auto cad, photoshop, indesign and all the background at the same time.

Stupid comment, not everyone wants to play games, what about if you want to run network simulations and need the screen space?

*facepalm*

I've got an N Series Asus myself albeit an slightly older one (N550LF-CK026H) and it's fantastic. Blisteringly fast. It really does boot up in around 2 seconds. The difference between mine and this one is mainly that this one has a much better processor. Mine only has an i5 clocked at 1.6ghz (rising to 2.4). Whereas this one has an i7 clocked at 2.4ghz (rising to 3.4). Not to mention the i7 has 4 cores whereas mine only has 2.

I don't run many new games on it as I'm more of a console gamer. But I do know that it can run Arkham Asylum on ultra settings. And can also run the Witcher 2 well on everything but the highest setting. So I imagine this laptop will run even better. The only thing that is odd is that mine has a Gt745m whereas this one only has a Gt740m. Don't know why they gave this one a slightly worse graphics card.

You know you can run a 1080p screen at a lower resolution in game right?

And I absolutely disagree with how you're putting down the importance of a full HD screen. I don't know how you can multitask on a 768p screen. You can barely fit anything on the screen height wise.

Besides that, who really games on a laptop?
Maybe the odd occasion, but you should have a desktop if you're serious about gaming and if you're not, then decrease the resolution.

Anyone know good machine for photo and video editing under £1000?

No. This is too weak for decent video editing. Something like a Lenovo y510p is a much better choice.

The Lenov y510p essentialy has the same specifications as this laptop apart from having a marginally better GT750M rather than a GT740 GPU

The one I looked at had Intel Core i7-4700MQ

Have these at work. Good performer though now wish I'd ordered mine with ssd as a colleague did - makes a dramatic difference for software development. As earlier poster said, trackpad is dire and makes typing almost impossible unless mouse is connected.

Original Poster

I understood that the performance improvement between 4th gen and 3rd gen i7 is marginal.

where are the uk reviews of this laptop?

Thanks for posting. just ordered to replace my dying macbook pro. Seems great price for i7 and full HD
