While this is an exceptional price be wary of the flashed Tencent Games version of this phone as Asus have confirmed they will not support it and so the phone will never receive an update. It also means some apps including Netflix will not work. That having been said you will not find a better phone for that money if you can work around the problems. Source: I bought one and sent it back. Also confirmation from Asus customer service.

Check out Jerryrigeverything's tear down of this on youtube the grill on the back is nothing to do with any of the cooling features its just a hole in the back of the phone that lets in everything making this the most un-waterproof phone you can buy.

It's for the fan accessory isn't it? So it can pull heat away from the copper heat pipe inside.
This or a OnePlus 7t on eBay?
Also is this the Chinese version flashed with a global rom that can't be updated OTA

So how do you know your not buying a flashed one?
Chinese phones don't usually have Google store so are flashed with a global rom meaning no warranty and ltd updates
This has to be the Chinese version , global version is about £800 plus !! I bought one like this last week which came down to £405 with code on eBay , and I returned it back to the seller , the reason for that was the phone was Chinese version and they installed global Rom on it and sealed it . With this ; You will not be able to update it automatically so you have to do it manually which is risky and not the right way. It also doesn’t pass the safety net check since it’s version changed , Also the hole at the back is a problem too as it allows dust in and there has been many people who had issues with that and said that dust has made the camera Lens dirty which is a big drawback. This also makes it risky with water since this device isn’t waterproof . I now have Huawei P30 Pro which is a great phone . I also would recommended OnePlus 7 pro or 7T pro . Depends on your budget .

But 120Hz screen!!! I'll just get a case to cover the hole - I'm really not bothered about all this waterproof part of a phone. Waterproof or not I have no intention to introduce it to water

If the phone you got was sealed how did you know it was flashed?

The official global edition is double the price?!? Damm!!!

To be honest the price probably gives it away. Also I think the global version only comes in 512/12gb or 1tb/12gb variants. All the Tencent Games ones have Tencent written on the back whereas global version does not. I'd maybe ask the sellers for a photo of the box to be sure. Avoid any Tencent ones. Final check is to run the IMEI through ASUS if you buy it and they can confirm.

I know the screen is great and it has 6000htz battery and it’s fast etc... , if a case can solve that then good . I suggest you look at the x da developers forum and check what people have said about it ( people who own it and using it already ) . Sealing is easy they re-seal it Themselves. I knew it was Chinese since it was made for China and the writing was all Chinese at the back ! Also Through the serial number and that I couldn’t get warranty in the UK . The official global version is expensive ya. You can look for it and find out how much it is right now .

Exactly . Spot on benji , that’s how you know if its global version or cheap Chinese version . Also I did not know the global version doesn’t come with tencent tag ! Good to know that too .

How could I forget XDA - good ol' rooting days until banking apps stopped working on rooted phones.

Will chk them out - thanks for the reminder bud

Don't make the mistake I made though. Turns out Tencent did also do a 512gb/12gb version. I know because I bought it! Sent it back today though when I found out it won't get updates and didn't work with Netflix of Samsung Galaxy Watch. I've been a bit burned by this so I'm just gonna plump the full price on the Asus UK store as they're the only ones that sell the UK store (except second hand on eBay). Asus have posted a black Friday teaser so fingers crossed for a sitewide discount or a specific ROG phone one.

Haha no worries, check e x da and other reviews on YouTube etc, considering all the cones that you may face with this phone , if you really wanna get it eventually , you should go for the global version.
I've got this, flashed the worldwide ROM. For updates I just place the update file in root and the phone will install it.

Edit: Netflix also works in HD

does it not bother you that you can't use any banking apps, google pay, company MDM's or other secure apps?
Well the phone isn't rooted so they work.

Well no it won't as the phone will no longer be certified due SafetyNet not being valid surely?
I would advise people to do what I did and stump up for the official global version of this phone. Whulst £800 is expensive, when you consider the specs of this phone compared to the iPhones and the Samsung galaxy's of this world, it's not a bad price.

With the global version you get 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage and 12GB of RAM as standard. It also comes in a nicer presented box, you get a 30w charger which the tencent version doesn't get. It also comes with the fan accessory in the box and a set of OK headphones which again, the tencent version doesn't get. I'm pretty sure the tencent version doesn't have band 20 support either.

When you consider that buying through ASUS UK will get you a proper warranty and no risk of paying import duties, speedy delivery and they do 0% finance. I think it's a no brainer for this beast of a phone.

Not exactly true. Regarding the updates, you can do them manually if you have the know how and use guides on YouTube or xda. The updates are regular. I've updated several times since release and no issues with any apps etc

Also netflix is installed, on mine at least...

I have the phone and currently using google pay and banking apps with no issue. I'm not rooted with locked bootloader so don't see why they wouldn't work. Also SafetyNet passes.

So you have the global version then rather than the Chinese one which you would have to unlock the bootloader and flash with the Global version - that's what I'm referring to as we suspect this one will be the Chinese version

No, I have this same Chinese model (tencent variant) but I converted to global model by flashing the rom. Now I can update manually by putting the zip file in memory. That is what I meant by taking few steps.

If you are unfamiliar with any of those terms then maybe this is not the phone for you. But for this money you aren't getting this kind of hardware anywhere else. So if you have the knowledge just why not.

Good to know. I'm far from a technophobe but I'm probably lazy enough to not challenge myself into learning how to do all this. If for any reason my return is declined though I think I'll be signing up for XDA forums and getting learning! I must say the phone itself is awesome and I'm looking forward to getting it again.

They never do you know and I'm IT literate and frustrating - always a step missing and then you have to read someone else's steps and kinda combine them...

here is the link from XDA do note: the member who posted this didn't have enough posts at the time to create clickable links, so at the begining of each of the links is a space that must be removed for them to work. Let us know if you get stuck at all - here or there, reg66 is my user name there too!!

Also, if you want to keep root, you'll need to keep to keep bootloader unlocked too, so you can go ahead and ignore the last part of the instructions on re-locking and removing root access...

Thanks for this, just got the phone and going to attempt it tonight.

Did you have any issues with the missing band 20? I'm on Three and first impressions would suggest the missing band 20 might be an issue. Luckily I'm on a rolling contract so could swap if needed.
