The beast is back

Love this phone 😁

Thanks op
I have had this phone now for a month and I do like it. It's a shame a phone so good elsewhere has a pretty standard camera but I've possibly been spoiled by a previous Pixel. I ended up plumping the extra for a UK reseller though as the killer for me with these imports on the ROG Phone is the lack of OTA updates. I'm hoping this phone will do me for a few years so the extra cost for proper warrantied UK stock is worth it in my case.

To be fair this is the global version, so will get updates as much as the one you got, but I do get your point.
Did you get one yet though.

Oh that's good. I couldn't find the global version anywhere when I was looking before. Be somewhat warned as there were a few I found that referred to them as global editions but when I probed the sellers they were flashed Tencent ones like all the rest.

I don't believe there is an 512gb tencent version.

This I can confirm. There definitely is as I bought one. It was in every way the same hardware as the phone I'm typing this on but said Tencent Games on the back. Failed SafetyNet test though and had a flashed ROM. I returned it and bought the UK one. I did notice when I got the UK one though that it is identical to the EU model so if it's cheaper anywhere in the EU I'd have no complaints. I should also add that the deceptive resellers I'm talking about were all on eBay.

Ebay sellers from the far East tend to miss off some important buts, and don't tend to respond to messages.
MrSwitch at it again with the bargains!
Now biggie for me note 9 or this people?

The fix for the Tencent ROG is very easy to do, it took me all of 10 mins.
There are several way to do it but I did it my own way, as I didn't see the point of flashing another version or the fastboot rom.

Process
1.Open bootloader with the scripted tool that does not send your details to Asus.
2. Flash rootstack through adb.
3. Install magisk and Root Explore
4. Open Magisk and let it finish installing
4a.Give Root Explore full access In
5. Edit Country settings files, changing CN to WW. ( also delete hidden themes blocker whilst in the setting file.
6.Seen as the bootloader is unlocked and you have root remove Google crap and 3rd party app you don't use.
7 if you want, reflash Bootstsck to lock the bootloader or use the 1st tool
Job done.
With ota restored I you want to wait for it, as you can manually download it and install It yourself.
Now rocking Android 10 with only essential apps as I see it on the device, Pico level( Gapps)

On the warrenty front, I actually registered mine @Asus and it was accepted whether that means I have a warrenty or not I don't know.

I believe this error in the settings affected the early firmware versions, it also killed the ability to manually update. People who received devices on later firmware versions could still not use OTA but were able to manually update by downloading the file. It will be interesting to see if Asus rectify this in the Android 10 update.
ASUS are not doing too bad with an update per month so far, how many oems can say that.

I haven't used the camera that much but video stability is amongst the best, the front camera especially.

I must confess I knew manual updates were possible but assumed you had to manually install every one as it was released. I didn't realise the quick fix then allowed OTA updates to carry on automatically like a normal phone. In which case what a bargain. I got a bit fed up of mucking about so convinced myself at the time that the simplicity and the the UK charger were worth the £180 premium as it was then (I paid £650 for the identical Tencent one using an eBay code) 🙃

On XDA there is an app which downloads the ota file which makes things easier.
Ok, somewhat lighter edition, but that's some reduced cost

The 512gb comes in a unique designed box, with a load of accessories, plus obviously the fact its got 384GB more storage.

I’m looking at this phone as my first android - only phone that’s ever tempted me away from iPhone.

Am I right in thinking that the Tencent version is also know as ‘Global’ and the uk spec is ‘international’ with the key point being the tencent/global version doesn’t have 4g?

But instead of paying more for the UK spec I could buy this version and update the firmware?

The UK version. Is the official Global, the Tencent the Chinese Ltd with the Global rom on it.

The Tecents have been assigned a CN prefix instead of a WW on the FP reader and this is causing the OTA issue. This can be edited once the booladee and root have be obtained.

Coming from IOS I suspect you will not be familiar with some of these terms so there will be a few things to learn, but the tools are there and it's a lot easier than it was to do it now.

Absolutely those terms are unfamiliar.

Used to jailbreak so not a complete noob but you’re right, need to do a bit of reading first.

Either that or just save the hassle and buy from official uk suppliers when prices come down.

You could buy in the UK at almost double the price, but yeah have done jailbreaking means you know the need to be methodical.
I don't know how much better the Global will be for an extra 4 gb of ram and bigger storage, then again if your a hardcore gamer storage is king.
But as I said the process is a lot easier now then it was during autumn, many of the obstacles have been removed.
Just to be clear, is this one a tencent one or normal?

I think this is a "normal" global madel. I've ordered one so will let you know when it arrives.

It's down to £679 now too btw.

Not received it yet. The site says that it's 5 to 7 working days to dispatch, so hopefully I'll get tracking in the next couple of days.
I have received this about an hour ago.
I can confirm that this is a Tencent edition, not a global edition.
I did not want the Tencent edition, but I'll do a little bit more research and see if it's worth keeping and converting the firmware. I believe that this version should have band 20 anyway, and I don't think the UK 8gb strix one has that.

If anyone wants to know anything about this one, let me know.

Initially, that was the case, however, then asus released the 8gb global (which was missing band 20) and the 12gb tencent, which seems to be the one that I have got.
Well, I booted the phone and it seems to have been converted correctly to ww edition.... I may just run it and see if I have any issues....
