Asus ROG Strix GL553 15" Gaming Laptop with backpack and mouse £649 @ AO

7th gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 1080p LED backlit panel, GTX 1050 graphics card with 4GB RAM, 2TB hard drive.

As well as hardware that should be able to pull off Full HD at Medium settings for most AAA titles (and significantly better for eSports) it also features a four zone RGB illuminated keyboard, USB 3.1 type-C and a DVD multi-drive (possibly? it's on the photograph but someone below mentioned it's not in the specs).

The negatives are no SSD and only average battery life (but if you're gaming you are probably going to be on power anyway).

Bundle Includes ROG Rucksack and Mouse

Sure it's an IPS screen? Can't see that anywhere on the spec sheet.

In the product details list, it says no CD/DVD drive. Have I missed something somewhere else that says there is a DVD multidrive?

according to asus this as a ssd and 1tb hdd

I thought it was but when I went to reread the advert it's not there. It must have been another laptop I was looking at. Good spot. Thanks!

It is highly likely that the "dvd drive" in the pictures is a blanking plate. Recently had a customer return a laptop because the DVD drive wouldn't open. It wasn't sold with a DVD drive (infact it stated the opposite). He was trying to open a blanking plate.

Do blanking plates usually have "Blu-Ray" written on them? Coz the one in the photos does.

Probably as good as it will get price wise I think, 1050ti likely 750ish on BF?

No but if it is marketed as not have an optical drive then I expect it doesn't.

Do you expect it will also have a US keyboard layout? Because it does in the photo's, as does over 90% of laptop's sold on Amazon, AO, Currys etc. But of course they have a UK keyboard layout.

I am just telling you to expect a blanking plate there, that is all.

I don't expect anything from the photos. It was you who mentioned them, not me.

You said the DVD drive in the picture was likely a blanking plate. I pointed out it wasn't.

Doesn't mean I expect this machine to have an optical drive. It's really not difficult.

Errr literally the first message you wrote was regards to the photo's. I do not understand how you can say you didn't mention them, but ok.

is this just for Gaming? or can it be used as a normal Laptop/Computer, also the picture has a Blu-ray drive,

It can be used as a normal computer, just the graphics card is there for the gaming option (or for any 3D rendering application).

Also no CD/DVD drive.

4GB for 2017 gaming laptop doesn't sound that great to me. Even though the 1050 seems nice.

4GB VRAM is plenty enough because this isn't gonna run anything above 1080p so why would it need so much, you can argue futureproof but a 1050 is just not futureproof anyway.

I could be wrong but I think to get >4Gb VRAM you need to step up to the 1060 gpu, which is considerably pricier.

Also says dual core processor in spec but isn't the hq model quad core?

I bought this for my son in August from AO. It came with a 1 TB HDD and 128 GB SSD plus a 2 year warranty. Also with a DVD drive.
Laptop is OK. I ordered different one but AO messed up the order. So they gave me this as a replacement. I think it cost me about £525. Laptop is good but the fan can be noisy at times.

there is a blank m.2 slot in these and its pretty easy to access a few screws and a rubber foot needs removing, and then you can upgrade, also has 2 SODIMM slots I woudl assume this has 1 8GB DDR4 stick in it so you could add another 8... also the screen is a proper IPS which is supposed to be very bright and good colours..

I am tempted to buy this, but what will Black Friday bring?

As long as you don't open the box, you can return within 30 days for a full refund. If you use it, they will charge up to 50% of the original cost.

The Consumer Contracts Regulations give you rights when shopping online. Your right to cancel an order for goods starts the moment you place your order and ends 14 days from the day you receive your goods.

A deduction can be made if the value of the goods has been reduced as a result of you handling the goods more than was necessary. The extent to which you can handle the goods is the same as it would be if you were assessing them in a shop.

Any terms and conditions on company websites are in addition to your statutory rights and don't replace them.

GL55x series normally didn't used to be IPS - instead TN normally. Is this definitely IPS?

This AO sale isn’t a ‘Strix’. The model number is a GL553VD-DM985T of which I cannot see any reviews at all apart from the AO site which leads me to think that a deal has been made between ASUS and AO.

My mistake on the heading. It is a Strix. Apologies.

It's a ROG STRIX GL553VD. If you click on Where to buy you will find that you're absolutely right, this 2TB model is only available through AO.

What would the battery life be like on this laptop for light use ie. Browsing and editing pictures in lightroom, when not used for gaming?

My son has a very similar laptop. He gets about 2-3 hours without gaming.

Thanks! Ordered one and quidco tracked £29.21 so potential even cheaper

My son has a very similar laptop. He gets about 2-3 hours without gaming.

That is pretty terrible.

Already canceled my order because they sold more stock than they have, so yeah...
Offered to get anything 20% more expensive for free but when they don't have anything even remotely close to this setup for £700...

Tried getting through to Asus, but no luck.

Does anyone know if this product is quad core? And also, what the maximum capacity of ram it can take?

Cant seem to find any info online.
