Haven't posted in a while although I was looking for a deal on a 15" with a bit of grunt behind it, and stumbled across this. It looks like an good deal for a gaming notebook with 23% off

ASUS ROG Strix ZX553VD-DM640T 15.6-inch FHD Gaming Laptop with Gaming Backpack and Mouse (Black Red) - (Intel Core i5-7300HQ, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD , NVIDIA GTX1050 4GB GDDR5 Graphics, Windows 10)

Waits for the obligatory this is only 1050, no good. Not touchscreen, bad. Blah blah blah.

It's not a 4gb 1050. Because they don't exist in this range, if im not mistaken this is a fault of Asus website description its more likely going to be the 2gb version or a ti would be a amazing deal but I doubt it

is a GTX1050 really going to cut it as a gaming laptop?

well depends what you play really. If you've got it for league of legends or counterstrike on the move the yes, yes it would. If you've bought it for AAA games max settings then no.

OK so,on every gaming laptop thread I've seen, everyone says no good as only GTX1050 BUT, I've not seen anyone recommend a laptop with a better version, for around the same price/small price difference. From what I can see 1050ti/1060 is at least £100 more so not comparable.

I'm presuming most people who want a 'gaming laptop' want it to play current games reasonably well rather than 10 year old games but maybe I'm wrong.

Looking for my son so needs to play games available now and into the next few years.

Well if he has to get a laptop over a pc then you're looking at paying a hefty price for that my friend.

well that's the conundrum we're having, laptop or desktop.

Average battery life: 3 hours!!

Hi I have bought the i7 model a few days ago, the laptop is good but I see what they mean about the screen, my 6 year old Dell xps's screen is much better. The laptop is fast but my most worrying thing is not being able to speak to Asus as for the last 10 days I have not been able to contact them via phone.

I promise you mate, PC the entire experience is better.
I have a pc and gaming laptop, i've accumulated about 2 hours of free time to use the laptop over the pc.
Before you get one the appeal for portability is massive, but you're paying double to get the standard of the pc

i have a 4gb 1050 their is a 2gb and a 4gb version, all these people winging about it not being good enough to game on don't know what there talking about, yeah your never gonna get ultra settings and 4k gaming, if thats wjat you want stay away form laptops as you need to spend a couple of 2 grand to get that sort of spec, but it will run most games on medium or high settings at 60fps and 1080p. Overwatch, Doom, GTA, H1z1 Dirt 4 ect all run at 60fps on high with these specs. where as games like player unknowns battlegrounds runs on medium on 60fps.

Why did you compare 10 year old games to today as if there was nothing in between? What about one year old? two year old? People not want to play those? I have a 1050 and whilst you may not be able to play todays beasts at Ultra you can play your GTA 5s, Witcher 3's, XCom 2's, Fallout 4's, Far Cry 4 etc at quite high settings with ease . Obviously, the benefit of PC games is you can faff about in the settings to hit whatever your target fps is. I am currently playing Dishonoured 2 which, when it first came out had lots of performance issues even on better systems. I've currently got most of the settings on either max, or the next one down and get between 45-60. Easily playable and is as smooth as butter.

I didn't compare 10 year old games to todays games, Kintsune did.

When I buy a PC I want it to play new future games (for at least a couple of years) so if a system is going to struggle with current AAA games then that's a good gauge of what it will be like 3 years from now.

I don't own any PC at the moment (mac user) so buying one with a 1050 would be false economy for me personally.

Correct. The gtx 670 I recently replaced in my desktop pc was purchased in 2012. It won't cut it for modern games and yet this gtx 1050 is similar performance. No thanks. Waste of money buying something that's already out dated! Gtx 1060 is the much better option.

Yeah but to get a 1060 in a laptop, you're looking at quite a bit more, not this price range. If you spend more you get better, yes but if you're looking at sub £1000 laptops, none have the 1060 that I could find on any website I looked through. Best you can hope for is 1050TI and even then you are looking at £900-1000, not £770.

Might i suggest you simply didnt look very well. Took 2 minutes to find more than one laptop with a 1060 under £1000 and one is less than £100 more than the laptop in this deal. Much better performance for arguably the same price.

You can indeed suggest that. I searched many websites, that wasn't one of them. Probably because when looking for a laptop a month ago (admittedly I was after different specs then as was for someone else) I just ended up frustrated on that website. Will have a look when I'm at the computer and find the one that's less than £100 more than this deal (as one linked is £180 more) ETA: first link must have been moderated.
The point was still the same though, even if I didn't check every website, that for more money you get better spec. But for this price...

Yeah, for this price you'd be mental to buy a basic 1050 when for £80 more you can have a chipset that will quadruple the framerate in every single game.
