Top of the range high end router (router only) for households with lots of devices and customisation/control requirements. All the usual high-end hardware and features plus some exclusive stuff like built-in Trend Micro antivirus/network monitoring. However, the thing that impresses me most about these routers is the web interface. Highly customisable, but also quite easy to use. Can also be extended with more features using 3rd party firmware (Asuswrt-merlin).

Interesting. Do you get poor speeds on 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

ExpertReviews says: "On the 2.4GHz band we saw a transfer rate of 38.9Mbit/s at 10m and 14Mbit/s at 25m."

CNet says: "On the 2.4GHz band, the router scored 236Mbps at close range and just 66Mbps at 100 feet (30 meters) away. These were as fast as expected."

That's a very big difference.

I would say one probably gets paid more by the manufacturer to review

My issues were dropouts which I never had/have with my dual band asus 1900

Can I put a VPN on this? I was thinking of getting one of these and then the NordVPN Black Friday deal but recently found out my SH3 won't allow it so need a router to plug into that. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to routers.

Yes these asus routers (asuswrt based firmware) support VPN server and client. Nord has some info about setting up as client on one of the routers here : nordvpn.com/tut…rt/

You don't necessarily need this router to do that, any asuswrt based model will do it (e.g. cheaper one). It's quite a common feature on high end routers from any manufacturer as well.
