Is it worth getting a router with Wi-Fi 6
How the hell are you supposed to cut a kitchen worktop with that?

I have this Router

You can selective route (AKA split tunnel), so you choose which devices use the VPN and which don't. Suggest you look at past posts for this router on here for the links on how to do this.

You could also daisy chain a second router in front of the VPN router

Also worth upgrading the Firmware to Merlin. Merlin now supports the AI-Mesh feature as well.

You'll need both router and device to support wifi6 in order to benefit.

I`d also say it's not worth it(unless price is the same???), unless you live in heavily congested area.

Thanks ordered.
At this stage aim for a Wifi 6 router IMO. You get good AC with them too.
love the vpn features!

What speeds do you get over VPN? I've got the older AC-66U but my 40mbit seems to reduce to about 12mbit no matter what settings I use.

Suspect it's the router but it's a pain because I bought it as a premium one and now having to upgrade again.
What this be a good option to connect to my virgin super hub 3? Considering this or an orbi rbk30

I had the same issue on the stock firmware but on Merlin firmware you get the best of it, including the VPN speed. I had to send 2 units back because they kept dropping wifi signals.

anything connected to a virgin hub in modem mode a much better router than the freebie virgin give you. Anything around £100 should give you massive improvement
karvai17/09/2019 09:05

What is your broadband speed?Did you try Express VPN? It has batter speeds.

You can get 7 day trial on the phone and check speed there.

I'm running Tomato firmware, can't be VPN as some of their connections show rediculously high speeds like we'll into hundreds of megabit. Turn off VPN and it shoots up, I suspect either the firmware or router is not geared to encrypting this much data constantly.

Is that a common issue/expected do you kniw? You'd think with VPN pretty widespread router manufacturers would have risen to the challenge.

Think most people run VPN just on their PC so that will be fast.

This router will top out at over 200 mbps through a VPN...

AC68U should do 40mbps (and up to 50mbps if you OC the CPU). I maxed out my DSL-AC68U at 40mbps using NordVPN, this is one of the reasons I upgraded to the RT-AC86U which has a much newer and faster CPU.

I have Ai-Mesh working with my RT-AC68U with Merlin FW and an Asus Lyra Mini. The Lyra mini was a royal PITA to setup and i'm not sure that I would recommend this setup.

AC66U has a single core CPU running at 600Mhz, the AC86U has a much newer dual core CPU running at 1.8Ghz and twice as much RAM...

I hit 33mps - 38mps using a max 40mps fibre optic line and a local Express VPN server. Streaming Netflix or the like simultaniously on muliple devices no problem. I even play online multi player Apex Legends on xbox live through the VPN without issue.

This router has AES-NI which accelerates the encryption and decryption and gives faster speeds.

At the time I bought the router, Merlin didn't seem to think that his firmware was using AES-NI (it's mentioned in the speed thread I linked to above). Is there something that needs to be done to enable AES-NI? Or is is just a matter of picking the correct profile in the OpenVPN client?

*edit* AES-NI is enabled by default according to this post: snbforums.com/thr…30/

No way of turning it on or off or seeing if it is actually doing its thing i am aware of.
If I have slow Internet circa 30mb because of infrastructure (using Now tv broadband but had the same speeds with talktalk) would a fancy router like this make a difference?
I always love these router threads!
Heat added for the price
I bought one the last time it was this price and still have not set it up!
Got it. Ok

This is great!

So would it be it be possible to have certain applications on a computer bypass the VPN?
If I have a server could at have local streams bypassing the VPN and remote/internet ones go through VPN?

I think what you might need to do (others may know better) is run a VM within your computer and have that IP set to bypass VPN in your router.

I was wondering that as I used to use get_iplayer a lot untill they started banning VPN addresses, this way I could just do it outside VPN.

I was thinking that too but then it’s more licences needed for separate machines than a single one for on the router...

Does iPlayer need a login/licence now? It's been a while since I used it.
