These are great to use with the virgin router in modem mode. I have 500mb with virgin and the performance on the asus in both speed and QoS is like day and night compares to the virgin piece-a-crap

I have two setup, one next to the virgin hub and one upstairs for my xbox. Its as if i have a wired connection

i still have the virgin media hub router they gave me when i first installed virgin media. are these able to just replace them? or do i need to get them to install it?

it disconnects all the time and its annoying. i tried to get them to replace it but they said no chance.

Just get tenda mesh mw3 or mw6 plug in and set hub as modern then all good to go (need the mobile app too)

You need to switch the virgin media router to modem mode, then just connect the asus to the virgin router

I too use one of these with the virgin hub in modem mode, works a treat.
would this work well if I used a BT Openreach white box as a modem ?

Yes, it will work great. That is how I use mine.
Can this be easily turned into a wiregurad server sitting behind another NAT with all its radios switched off?

Question is shall I get this one instead of waiting for a ASUS RT-AC88U I ordered a month ago from Amazon?
Can anyone suggest a cheap adsl2/vdsl2 modem? The BT Smart Hub doesn't have the functionality to go into modem mode.

I've got one of these connected to virgin 3 hub. 2.4Ghz is fine but the 5Ghz keeps disconnecting .

BT Openreach/Huawei HG612 3B seems to be the preferred option. They can be bought relatively cheaply on eBay.

Thank you guys. I actually think I may have one in a box from last time we moved house.
Think it was discussed in the Asus 88u thread, the pros & cons . The 88 older and slightly less cpu, but more ports . But both work well with Asus Merlin installed. My 88u has been rock solid(probably jinxed that now). Plus £25 quid cheaper. I would wait for the 88u

Is this a better option than the posted deal, then?
Does this have dual wan failover?

What was your delivery by date?
I ordered on the 26th and mines should be delivered by the 1st of Feb. But hasnt left yet.
Same boat as above with the 88u... mine’s coming tomorrow (28th) 1 day after their “latest delivery” date of 27th.......... almost want to kick up a fuss!

Think I’m going to stick out the 88u though... unless someone says different
what was the deal on the ASUS RT-AC88U ?

edit

£111.45

The author of the custom firmware, RMerlin recommended the AC86U on this thread:

Yeah cheaper and work just great
I have one of AX92U spar one of the in pack that I brought from yesterday deal. Pm me if any one interested
How does this compare to using Google WiFi points? Thanks!
Hi...sorry I'm not as tech savvy as other.
I'm having BT fibre installed with the smart hub 2. What improvements will it give me and is it easy to setup, plug and play?

I've bought 3 of the BT Wifi discs, is this needed if I have these discs fitted around the house? Will there be any further improvements with this router?

Google wifi is almost nothing in term of feature you get this router

Mine is also getting delivered today. Got the same doubt.. Should I order this? Don't mind spending £25 more as hopefully either of these will serve for few years. Really would like to know which one is better? Less number of ports on this one is not an issue. Would love to hear an opinion based on the performance

I doubt BT wifi disk will work with this.

If you have a modem or compatabile
router in modem mode, it is pretty simple to get this working in basic mode.

But i would suggest this is overkill if you are not going use it's features.

How is this a deal was already at 139gbp last year I bought it for 139. Seems to be the normal discounted price on Amazon anyway great router better than the bt garbage
It's the same price in loads of places, such as Overclockers UK, in case anyone else prefers supporting smaller businesses
How would this compare to a Netgear Nighthawk R8000?
On Virgin it's dire, looking to change
Great router. Steps to Internet sanity :

1. Buy router
2. Install Merlin
3. Buy VPN subscription
4. Setup OpenVPN connection in Merlin

Simples...

not really, the ASUS has a lot more features, but if none of those interest you then yes.

Being able to splig 5 and 2.4GHz channels is important to me, I also like running a VPN so the Tendas do not tick those boxes.

Also the ASUS has 4 gigabit ethernet ports to plug into The tenda MW6 has 2 , one of which is the input so if you have any smart hubs by the router, you are out of space.

The thing is huge! Lol
Same will set it up at the weekend.
a good place to look for a BT Openreach modem to hook up to this is on your local freebie groups (Freecycle / Facebook etc). Or pay a tenner and get one off eBay

- Is it possible to whitelist certain sites (say BBC/iPlayer)
- Is it possible to create a second wifi network with no VPN protection from same router ??
