Hot. I bought it for around £150 and at the time, is was the best deal. Awesome router.
Great piece of kit.
Bought this, to replace my netgear r7000 which caused the problem to my media server and had to be restarted twice a day. No issues now at all. Range is decent as well.
I bought a month ago for £133 from Amazon, it has been solid on BT fibre, the range is much better than the BT Smart Hub

Yes speed increased from 260 to 390. Seriously good product using Asus wrt Merlin.
I'm with virgin media.... will this router be compatible I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me.
Massively sceptical, as I have an RT-AC68U which cost me a pretty penny, and it overheats daily. And sadly it turns out to be a common issue online.

Do yourself a favour and get a unify ap and gateway / mikrotik most stability you can ever have for less price

This router has Two-Way IPS - an improved two-way intrusion prevention system that protects all your network from spam, DDoS attacks, network attacks and more. Additionally, it also scans the packets that are sent from your network to the internet.
Or the RT AC88u for £137 from amazon warehouse

That's a 68, this is 86 but does same job I guess.

Bought this t'other week for a couple of £ more, fed up of superhub being less than super. It's been great so far, better speeds at front end of the house (router/modem is at the back of the house) and no drop outs or "pauses" when downloading, surfing etc that were happening regularly before.

Got this connected to 8 port switch, PC, TV, Upstairs Ethernet cable, Home plugs, and all working great with the improved WiFi to boot. Had to plug TIVO direct into the router rather than the switch for that to work although it may of just all needed restarting.
Would it not be worth waiting for routers with Wifi 6 standard to make it future proof? :/
Future proof - heard that before. I think future resistant would be a better description.

I guess it depends if you are actually going to need it in the near future or not. Personally I doubt I'll have more than a couple of wifi 6 enabled devices (probably phones) in this house in the next 3 years and even then I have absolutely no need for the increase in data speeds as I will still be limited to my ISP package and also the server I am connected to for whatever I am doing (usually not much beyond suring, social media).

Personally I'd be happy to buy a WIFI 6 router down the line (another ASUS) and use this one to create an AIMESH.

For sure, plenty of hukd community are doing the same, including myself. You should go into the virginmedia hub and turn off router functionality i.e. modem only

This is a different beast.

Although I like the route you took, not for the masses as setup can be tricky for the non techy savvy

I considered both before going for the ac86u. The following helped.

What are main advantages , better speeds? VPN? Any others for average home user
£129 is the normal price.

I got mine from very in the sale section for £126 using a code.

Its a decent router with good range. I have Merlin firmware on mine.

Anything less than £129.99 is considered an unusually cheap price for this. £129.99 is considered the norm.

UniFi all the way. Installed half a dozen in others houses now. Never skip a beat

It was a tough call, but I went for the ac86u for the newer hardware (mainly processor) so the more likelihood of it being supported for much longer (whether it's Asus or Merlin) - as I was coming from the n66u.

I would say the Asus beam forming feature and firmware support.

I have the 88u. 8 ethernet ports is great. Saves me having to use an ethernet switch beside the router which frees up space and a wall socket.
The 88u also plays well with ifttt and alexa which is handy.
Previously had the 86u from amazon warehouse but sent it back because I couldn’t get it to work in mesh mode with my 66u.
Also it sits vertically and can’t be wall mounted or “velcroed” to the wall because of its odd angled shape.
But each to their own depending on needs

Yep, I changed to this router about 18 months ago now, been flawless since. The Virgin media router that was sent out when our speeds were boosted is awful, constant wifi drop outs.

This is still pretty steep to pay for a router if you already have one that works fine on Ethernet, but it's definitely worth it if others on the house use wifi.
I know this deal has expired but how does this router compare to the bt smart hub such as range, speed? Also, would I need a modem for this too?

Much better, if you like messing around with the settings or need things like ddns support. Useful too as you can use it as part of a mesh if you have an older asus model lying around.
You need a modem for asus models beginning with rt. eg
Asus RT AC86u. The equivalent models with built in modem begin with dsl Eg Asus DSL AC86u
