Be careful as there is talk of this going end of life as the hardware does not support the new firmware features such as AIMesh. Also it is much criticised for its flaky 5ghz performance.

Netgear R7800. Excellent all-around router. Also very good firmware support from Netgear. I got 7-8 updates last year to fix various bugs and security issues. So far 1 update this year to fix security issue.
Asus customer service, useless (putting it politely). Wait ages for them to answer then they haven't a clue how to fix problem
Got it for £100 a few weeks ago from Amazon, but it was restarting on its own every day (had a replacement as well), so returned it. ASUS Customer Service had no idea what is going on or how to fix the issue. Brilliant.

I got the TP-Link AC3150 after it went hot on here. It was to replace my Virgin Hub3.0 which had terrible coverage. So far it’s been great, can’t fault the 2.4GHz coverage
take it you never knew about the puma 6 chipset in the virgin jakey router 3

2,4ghz thats for you're old laptop
No idea what the puma 6 chipset is.

Unless I’m in the same room as the router like my TV, why would I use 5Ghz in a 5 bed detached?

If your not bothered about the new standards but want superb 2g and 5g range. Grab a used ruckus access point of ebay and add it to your network. I have a 7363 and it's amazing. Enterprise hardware.

Had a look on ruckus website and ebay and a r720 is 1000 quid+.
How do they differ from the usual routers we see?
A Archer or OpenWRT model to even a Google WIFI.
