Been looking for a gaming laptop with a GTX 1060 in it for a while now and found this one which I think is a good price. It also has a 120Hz screen, ideal for gaming:

  • Equipped with the VR Ready Nvidia GTX 1060 6 GB Graphics
  • MIL-STD-810G test certified durability
  • 6.5 mm bezel for extreme immersion in a much more compact package; FX505 features an IPS-level panel with up to an ultrafast 120 Hz refresh rate for supersmooth gameplay with minimal motion blur
  • ASUS-exclusive HyperCool technology comprises of the Anti-Dust Cooling (ADC) system and Fan Overboost technology to ensure exceptional cooling during gaming marathons
  • Furthermore, cooling is also improved by the patented trapezoid-cut lid and intelligent parallel fan placement

looks quite a good deal
I missed the Dell deal last week, how does this compare guys? Looking at getting one for my son who is starting to learn coding and games design. Will this work out cheaper than building our own desktop considering we would need to get a monitor and keyboard etc?

This is very good spec laptop, but a desktop would be better for sure

All depends on whether you want/need the portability of a laptop

Exactly this. You could get a much better spec desktop for the same price. However the laptop would be good for portability.
Is it genuinely retailing at 1299 or is that an inflated price? I've about 800 to spend on a laptop and very tempted.

That is for sure inflated. Retail is around £899.

I bought this from very last month for around £870 on 12 months interest free payments so yeah 1300 is definitely inflated

Are you happy with it?

Tempted by this!

It has its negatives; runs incredibly hot and can get loud, the worst mousepad I’ve experienced on a laptop so you’ll need a mouse for even general computer use, not just gaming, really bad audio and as a personal gripe all the usb sockets are on one side so it can get clogged up

That all being said it runs well and none of those “issues” are really a big deal. Using a mouse is always better anyway and if the audio is too much of an issue then headphones are an easy fix. All in if you’re happy with the price it’s a solid little worker

I own this laptop as well and agree with all the points above but it is very good and has good specs. I bought a laptop pad cooler and that keeps the heat right down while gaming.
I have an Fx504 which looks like the same case as this. I'd avoid getting this if you plan on doing any serious gaming on it. The heat sink for the Cpu and GPU is linked together and I get a lot of freezing when playing semi demanding games. I regret not getting a desktop it a laptop with a good cooling solution

What do you mean by serious gaming? Like blasting Witcher 3 on Ultra?

Actually I got the freezes even running Rust on low. I can play stuff like EVE with a second monitor plugged in and loads of browser windows open and Netflix. I got a cooling matt with fans and some other cooling extractor fans too and it didn't solve my freezes. I also undervolted my GPU and CPU to try to help with cooling more but none of that helped.

To be fair, RUST is a poorly optimised game so that doesn't surprise me. Do you think this laptop would be ok with games like CS:GO and Overwatch?
CS:GO has been fine so far, I haven't tried overwatch but if I were to go back in time I'd just get a desktop instead. If the mobility was important I'd probably get a light and thin laptop that is actually mobile and could be carried around easily
The FX504 is terrible, it has a single heatpipe design on the CPU and power limits due to having a 120w power supply.

This is the FX505, it was a hastily released to replace the FX504 to correct it's power issues but it still doesn't have the best cooling design, a undervolt and a cooling pad would help, but personally I'd look for a better laptop for hardcore gaming. I have a MSI Leopard 8RE, it's basically the same specs (but double the ram) and its cooling is 1st class. I have a 50mv undervolt on the i7 8750h and use a cooling pad and it boosts continuously to 3.9ghz, while the 1060 hovers between 1780-1830ish mhz and doesn't exceed 70 degrees

Thanks for this. Got mine today, haven't done much with it yet, but liking it so far.

You were not kidding about that touchpad! I was thinking to myself "how bad could it be?"... now I know!!! Still, don't intend to use be using it 99% of the time!

Grab a cooling pad today while Amazon have it's offers and it'll perform better, be quieter and hopefully last longer.

I paid £12 for mine and it's made a world of difference, I especially like the fact I can prop mine up, makes it a lot more comfortable

I got mine yesterday and I have to agree with you - I'm liking it so far too.

I played some Overwatch on medium settings and I'm able to get 120-150+ fps on fullscreen mode.

The touchpad isn't the best, feels a bit flimsy and is quite loud, however it works and will be using mouse for games.

I didn't manage to pick one up on Prime day, would you mind sharing which one are you using? I've had bad luck with cooling pads in the past (though it's years since I bought one).

Anyone will do tbh. They do make a big difference if your laptop has air intake vents on the bottom half, most gaming laptops do these days
