In my opinion it is the best price for a laptop in this class of 14" portable laptop that includes a dedicated graphics chip, DVD drive, dual core CPU and 4GB of RAM. An excellent alternative to the Asus UL30A from Carphone Warehouse at £349. You get a lot more equipment for a little more money, at the expense of slightly bigger dimensions, weaker battery (4400Ah vs. 5600Ah from CPW I think) and 300grams heavier weight difference.

I have bought one of these via the website. Ordered on 30/6/10, delivered by 2/7/10 via DHL. The box was wrapped in grey plastic so it had no protection during transit. Mine arrived with a 3 inch gash in the box. Thankfully nothing was damaged. Things were fairly well wrapped in the box, with the laptop covered in clear plastic along anywhere that has a flat surafce. The CD's and manuals were loose packed.

Contrary to their picture the laptop I got was in silver finish.

Good deal post - plenty of detail

Seems a good deal for having switchable graphics. How easily is the CPU overclocked & what effect will thast have on battery life I wonder?

Original Poster

The overclock function is officially suported by Asus. They call it "Turbo 133" technology and is enabled via a software tool preinstalled. I think it is somewhere in the Power4Gear power management utility. I have not tried it on my laptop yet so cannot comment if the turbo boost will work with this SU2300 processor, nor can I comment about how much battery drain it can create. It works for the SU7300 Core2Duo chip, as many reviews state.

Shame the cpu is the 1.2 version.

Theres's a big thread on the similar but lower-spc'd UL30A SU2300 powered laptop at Overclockers here. I didn't read it all - but long battery life being reported and fine for playback of 720p .mkv etc. Folks mention using the Power4Gear tool to reduce CPU speed for longer battery life. I didn't read that far so maybe there's some mention of how fast it'll clock.

It looks like you got yourself a nice laptop

Indeed, the Core2Duo version seems to be unavailable in the UK. But this Celeron dual core is a detuned Core2Duo anyway, so the performance ain't bad for most things you would do on a laptop. It is still miles better than an netbook Atom CPU.

Asus's Turbo 33 takes an SU7300 from 1.3 to 1.7 - I couldn't find figures on how much this CPU will overclock; perhaps the op will tell us later.

Seems an excellent idea from Asus switchable graphics and clockable cpu so you can tune your laptop for battery-life or performance.

I am happy with it, for the price I paid, as i would've went with the UL30A from CPW if this one didn't turn up on the PC World / Currys / Dixons site.

But the question is it a better buy than the Asus UL30A?

Yeah I will have a go at some point just for curiousity, and report back. There seems to be no options in the BIOS for CPU overclocking.

That is one of those questions where there will be no right answer to. All depends on the user and their desire / requirements.

well it's slightly better specced and has a bigger screen. But then it is £50 more expensive and less portable. Depends what you want I suppose.

Which model you talking about there are about 3 UL30 models.

Just for info you can get the same laptop from Currys website and use the HOT05 discount code to bring it to £379.97 (_;)

I believe that the code ends today though, so act fast!

Compared with the Asus UL30A from Carphone Wharehouse (Celeron 1.3).

.

Its worth mentioning it only has a 1 meg and not 3 meg cache as mentioned.

Quidco has a code for 5% on this, in addition to 3% from Quidco too.

This drops the price to under £369 with all going well.

Its got an extra gig over the UL30A and an integrated optical drive - so only £20 more than the CPW price or with quidco on CPW price - just under £40 more.

So - you are saving the price of an external optical drive, and buying a two gig stick of memory (as you would need to discard the 1 gig stick in the UL30A) and getting the option of faster graphics (which can be switched off to conserve the battery) - all for an extra £20/£40.

So - unless you really need a a laptop that has a 0.8 of an inch smaller screen - then its really no competition!

I agree with Ibiza. I wish they had such a code at the time of my purchase. If memory serves me right, I had used the promo code PCW5 that got me 5% off £399.99 bringing it down to £379.99, but zero money back from QuidCo.

£379.97 using "HOT05" from currys voucher till 21st July!!!!!!! + free delivery on orders over £199 automatically added so you can use both together!!!!!!!! yeah baby i'm gonna get me one of these!

These are the results running at full power (High Performance profile in Power4Gear), plugged in, using the discrete Nvidia GPU and with the "Turbo 33" mode enabled which overclocks the FSB to make CPU run at 1.6Ghz.

BASE SCORE: 4.6
Processor: 4.6
Memory: 5.5
Graphics: 4.9
Gaming Graphics: 6.0
Primary Hard Disk: 5.6

Could somebody do me a massive favour and check, as fast as possible, whether this came with a trial of MS Office? Would be hugely appreciated.

Great deal

Bought one myself. Was thinking about the UL30A and the cancelled 02 external Samsung offer.

They were this price a while ago but they went out of stock. With the long battery life and the option of the Nvidia Graphics it is a good deal for a price.

Check the forums at notebookreview.com/ as there is a sizeable user community there.
There is info there about using SetFSB to overclock further and hacked drivers for the hybrid graphics.

Just bought one from currys. Tried the hot05 code (thanks casben), and it currently still works! So 379.97, plus quidco (hopefully). Thanks for posting!

I just look on PCW site and yeah they increased the price to £449.97. You never know, they may out it back down again in future like they have the previous times.

No longer on their web site, so I assume this offer to be expired.

It might re-appear. It did disappear a while over a month ago and then re-appeared.

Mine arrived yesterday and it's silver. I haven't had a chance to set it up yet.
