Hard drive speed is crucial for a PC’s overall performance. Don’t let slow mechanical hard drives slow you down: ASUS VivoBook E402 is equipped with 64GB eMMC Flash Storage resulting in blazing-fast boot times and near-instantaneous application launches, such as your Microsoft Office apps.
3917717_1.jpg The full size chiclet keyboard features an improved design that allows for more accurate typing. It has 1.6mm of key travel with little key float for a solid feel and more comfortable typing experience. It's considerably durable too, with a 10-million keystroke life.
3917717_1.jpg With OneDrive PC folder backup, you can securely back up your Documents and Pictures folders on your Windows PC to OneDrive so that they're always protected, up to date, and available across all your devices.
3917717_1.jpg To keep heating issues at bay, ASUS IceCool Technology gives Asus VivoBook E402 a unique internal layout that keeps palm rest surface temperatures between 28゚C and 35゚C. This is significantly lower than body temperature so you stay comfortable for hours on end.
3917717_1.jpg A value laptop doesn't have to mean settling for something basic. Asus VivoBook E402 gives you all the notebook essentials with a premium feel.
3917717_1.jpg The Asus VivoBook E402 is an affordable 14-inch compact and lightweight laptop. It gives you a larger display, fast storage, loaded with MIcrosoft Office 365, and is packed with technologies designed to enhance your computing experience, making it one of the best choice for daily productivity tasks and entertainment.

Notebookcheck has an entry for this model, which takes you to a Tweakers' review (via Google Translate): (assuming YA is the same)

3917717_1.jpg3917717_1.jpg
Tweakers' quote the specifications as:
Dualcore X2 E2-7015 CPU
4GB DDR3 RAM
14 inch screen @ 768 resolution
Storage 64GB eMMC / SSD
2 Cells battery 32WH / 1,65 KG
Wifi 5 AC and wired network and BT 4.1
HDMI / USB- C / Cardreader
Easy (Cover & screw) SSD / HD expansion

Amazon has a few mixed reviews (NB: not sure if moving over to Windows 10 from 10S would make matters worse!):

Great price if you want to run Linux on it but no good for Windows. RAM is soldered to board so cannot be upgraded. Reviews say painfully slow on Win 10, will be even worse on Win 11. (edited)

Less than half the compute performance of even an N4000? ouch!

I'm all for reasonably priced budget machines... but the N4000 is already at the cusp of what's usable in Win 10.

Bought it months back with 20% discount on the top. It's useless.

The problem will as much be to do with the eMMC storage adding a 2nd bottle neck.
I bet most buyers gave up and sent them back when Windows update was running, forever and forever. (edited)

I was considering giving Linux Mint a trial... is anyone running Linux on this or similar spec'd machine and if so would you be able to comment on its performance. I've only ever used Windows, I was therefore also wondering if you could run a dual boot set up or wouldn't it be capable? Thanks

I've ran Mint on much lower hardware and felt it is fine for basic computing needs. I love Linux so I'm probably a bit bias but Mint is good for a Windows style experience. I wouldn't dual boot. Try Linux for a bit, you can always put Windows back on.

Can you out Cloudready/Chrome OS on this?

I would assume you can, that would also work fine on this device for basic computing needs.

No it isn't. The processor does everything badly. Very, very slow. Spend a little extra on something better. They always have loads of these which have been returned.

@01484 it's very slow, you will be annoyed at the end for sure.

As said, Windows makes it hapless. You might get by on Windows S so do not go full Windows 10.

Windows S hasn’t existed for a long time. Windows S mode is just Windows with the default set to only get software via the Windows Store.

S Mode uses up 5GB of the hard drive. Windows 10 is 15GB plus. I think Microsoft backs up to the cloud too on S, Chrome Os like. (edited)

In all honesty, I'd wait for a refurb Chromebook at around the £100 mark. Yes it's a touch more £, but at least you'll have a device which just works without the faff.

I've given myself a hurty head trying to work out if the ‎E402Y-GA002TS and ‎E402YA-GA002TS are the same laptop (the YA is the one I can find the most online entries about, not much out there for the former).
