The 15 inch one is even cheaper, but it says mechanical hard drive on both, isn't it supposed to be a SSD?

The aspire is an IPS panel and has a better build quality than the ASUs laptop (all metal aluminium chassis). Apart from that the specs very similar. The aspire is more expensive of course. Neither are a fantastic deal to be honest given that we’ve seen a few gems over black Friday, (time machine aside). I’d wait to be honest if you can.
I’m not convinced the aspire has an IPS screen, I have asked customer service for confirmation but nothing yet. The aspire still has 10% TopCashback or 15% student discount, but I am still undecided.

i went with my gut and choose the aspire despite it costing extra. my current laptop is an acer aspire and it lasted me 10 years, i knew this thing was on its last legs and its current problem is over heating because the fan is failing. i feel like its a reliable brand and the extra memory on the aspire doest sound so bad since it had extra memory to the asus. 10 years, cant really complain

i just lack any knowledge on laptops at all, and what makes one good or bad. i keep reading the HP brand is god awful.

i really should have prepared better since i knew i needed a new laptop, getting a new laptop over black friday would have been perfect. damn.

“The Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G-51RL is one of the best budget full-size laptops in stores today. It checks most of the right boxes which are well built, slim and fairly light, gets a decent keyboard, an IPS screen and modern hardware”

Obviously this is talking about the model series not this specific model.

Acer website doesn’t specifically go into this though, not very helpful!

Edit

This is a slightly different submodel but is a 515-52G as well.- ips

For those prices I would consider the Lenovo S540, or alternatively the UM431DA from currys.

The S540 can be bought from John Lewis for 600 or if you have a student account you can get a beefier version on the Lenovo website for 566.

Have you ordered it already? Not worth it imo. I don't think that has an IPS display either. They would say in the display spec.

This Lenovo ideapad 530s is better value to be honest. Better built, premium all Aluminium casing, quality IPS screen and backlit keyboard as well, only thing that's missing is the number pad.

I’d agree with you. Trying to get warranty support from companies such as Acer or Aspire is so difficult it’s not worth the risk. Stick with major brands such as HP, Dell. Lenovo are decent too.

Which would you say is the best bang for buck laptop deal at the moment?
Preferably 15.6" FHD IPS screen with at least a Ryzen 5 or 8th gen i5, 8GB ram and an SSD drive.

Is the chassis the only real difference between the S540 and the 530S? Lenovo have a 530s with an i7 8550U for £599.

Thanks, they're both good laptops. I was almost sold on the Aspire despite the black (would prefer silver) and offset trackpad (I'm a lefty but that would play on my OCD). It has a 15.6 IPS display and a number pad, however the performance issues on the early model has put me off. They've added USB-C to the latest models but don't know if they've done anything to address the performance. Need it for CAD, Photoshop and some book keeping.

Despite only a 14" display the HP has a good spec but the lack of a backlit keyboard is a deal breaker.
Gutted I missed out on your S540 deal.

Need to keep it under 500 so leaning towards the 530s from Box. Shame Currys don't have it as they have £40 off on Quidco at the moment.
